Magicjack is hardware with the software built in. It basiclly converts the digital signal to anlog signal for your phone and back to digital. It is
    great for a phone line.

DSL lines create noise that modems sometimes do not like. The dsl filter
makes the line quieter for the modems and you have better results. It will still work without filter modem and magicjack but sometimes you might get
    a lot of noise.

DSL is also slower than cable is. I was on it for 3 years and hated it.

I had a DSL provider who provided news servers, had rock solid uptime, answered the phone, fixed crap when it broke, provided static IPs and didn't do any
sort of packet filtering/shaping/firewalling. He was expensive, cost about as much for a 1.5/384 DSL line as a 24 MB cable internet service, but it was worth it for someone who wanted to run servers and be on the net instead of being a content consumer.

I think it depends on your area. Years ago in my area DSL was slow and unreliable. I decided to give them another try. I now have a 12meg DSL connection which is faster and half the price than my 5-6meg cable
connection was. Plus I am allowed to run servers, they even offer
static IP's and they don't cap bandwidth. Supposedly I can even upgrade
all the way up to 40 meg if I wanted to, although I don't see the point.
