Funny that you make that kind of comment, considering you use Synchronet. But aside from Synchronet and Mystic, how many other modern BBS packages are out there that are currently being maintained? I can't really think of any.

True, and with Mystic, the "maintaining" is quite spotty at best.

I guess that's not really my preferred style of communication. I used to use IRC quite a lot in the past, and usually I visited chat rooms that were fairly active. Since the Synchronet IRC channel is fairly inactive with periods of activity, I'd rather just use the Synchronet support sub-boards on Dove-Net. I can post a message on Dove-Net and not have to idle in a chat room to see a response.

well irc is like an answering machine. you post a msg there and someone gets back to you later. people that drop in and leave in 2 minutes think it's always dead. people are at home at different times and are from different parts of the world, so take that into account.

i wouldnt suggest discussing any bbs software on irc. it kills the mood. it's boring and when people get the help they want, they leave and dont return usually. that's just what i've seen over the years.

i have live chats with people on my irc server, but people are active during different times of the day. you cant expect someone to be there when YOU are there and start talking to you. maybe they will, maybe they wont.

Agree. In the 90s, I used to have IRC open all the time and multiple channels from multiple networks open at the same time. It was a good way to catch me back then. Today, I do a lot more with the PC, and idling on IRC is not practical (exacerbated by ADHD, which makes me lose track of things in the background).

Discord is better, because it has notifications, so I know if there's been activity without having to remember to look. I use as many different notification sounds, so I can recognise what app the notification is from, without having to look. :)

I'd say not really too many, based only on what I see in the

Mystic-centric like this one is Synch-centric). Folks seem to
just work around bugs/issues while hoping that the author will get
to it one day. To be truthful it seems somewhat strange to me.

I think we're lucky that Rob Swindell takes time almost every day

Yes, but if you leave an IRC client (I use an external one, not
from within the BBS) idling in the channel(s), you can do the same
thing. Post a question and then leave, come back later and see if
anyone replied. The bonus though, is that sometimes you get a
nearly instantaneous reply if somebody happens to be there when
you ask the question. Both methods are great resources, and to me
it makes sense to use both. Also, there's no 'TM' in IRC... ;-)

Why is that? Why is there little activity on Synchronet IRC?? I don't like installing software I don't use much so I won't use Discord. I suppose I could use the web interface but anything web seems to slow to me.

It is sporadic, but it's there on Discord. IRC I find hardr to track, due to the lack of notifications (idling doesn't work for me).

I share your sentiments about web stuff, both chat and forums. :)

No GUI? Do you not use Windows or any sort of GUI environment? And have you ever used instant messengers such as Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, etc.? Most of the software I've used in the last 25+ years or so for exchanging messages have had a GUI, mainly due to the operating systems in use.

One of my favorite IRC programs is mIRC (for Windows). I used to use it a lot, and after a while I decided to buy a registration code for it due to how much I used it. It's shareware, and I figured that with how much I used it, I probably already got my money's worth before I paid for it..

I haven't used Discord much, but occasionally I've dropped in on the Synchronet IRC channel, only to see little to no activity at all.

I used to enjoy IRC but it's not the way it was 10-15 years ago. I have to laugh. If I logon to freenode and join ##chat there's over 100 users in the channel and nobody chatting. For me, message notifications are a vital feature these days. Back in the 90s, I used to just sit on IRC all the time, but it's not as easy to just sit and idle. If I'm not looking at it, it doesn't exist, for all intents and purposes, unless something grabs my attention, hence the need for notifications. :)

I think one advantage of echomail & Dove-Net is that you don't have to actively be there to wait to see the response. You can log on, post something, and log off, then log on later to see if anyone responded.

Discord works that way too. It tracks where you were since the last time you connected to that server and shows you where there are new messages...

Yeah, our team at work has started to use Microsoft Teams, which seems to use a Discord-like interface. I'm still getting used to it and haven't used it a whole lot, since it seems like yet another way to share information when we already had ways to share information (email, IM, an internal wiki, etc.).

Depends... there are still some very active channels. Some of the
