I don't know if the forum was locked, but I think we need to have more enhanced enrichment programs for children so they would not be illiterate where they can not read as adults.
There should be summer school enrichment programs to help improve childrens reading at the fourth, sixth and eigth grades.

Also, in recent years, I've heard the public school system in the US has generally lowered standards
in order to be able to say more students are passing and graduating. I've been a bit surprised by
that, and if true, I think the trend needs to be reversed. Although going through school can be tough
at times as a kid, I think it's good to try to ensure kids get the education they need to be
literate, decent at math, etc..

In a culture where summer vacation is the norm, I imagine kids would typically not want to attend that.
When I was a kid, I remember summer school feeling like a kind of punishment, or it meant your grades weren't good enough (though I
suppose that's exactly the reason you're describing).

I've always thought year round school would be the answer to learning. Just think how hard it was to get into the groove after the summer break. What about all that maths stuff.. just a distant memory. Perhaps they can shorten the day in lieu of. Maybe it's time for a change and not keep doing it the same way because that's how it's always been done. Thoughts?
My daughter went to summer school last summer. Willingly. She wanted to catch up because her junior high school curriculum was different than some of the other schools, and her friends were a class ahead. That was the first time I'd heard of someone using summer school as a tool.
And well versed. The testing regimen has focused on succeeding at test taking, not critical thinking, arts or music. A society needs well rounded, skeptical, critically thinking adults to thrive - something that is contrary to political parties attempting to manipulate the body politic.

I had taken summer classes when in college, willingly, because I wanted
to get classes done and out of the way (particularly, the first couple terms of college calculus - those two were offered as compressed
classes one summer, 5 days a week for a couple months). The full curriculum wasn't always available during the summer, but I was able to take some of them.

Yeah, it's surprising to me that the school system in the US would be
made to not prepare students well, and it seems not enough people
complain about it.

I took classes that I didn't have the time/energy for in the school year. Partly, because my parents didn't want me slagging around and wanted me working or in classes. I took economics and accounting classes in the summer, which ended up getting me my first job (I understood computers and accounting, got a job in a company in IT where no one in either department knew both)
I took a sanskrit class, too - we had a great junior college nearby with a great radio station. Made for nice summers.
