also, these media reports seem to give these other future shooters ideas.
I sort of feel like our media does not do enough to make the children who commit these crimes sound like criminals. The adults, maybe, but not the children. Just this week, after the Fla shooting, we've had all sorts of
hoax calls closing down schools in KY and, in every case but one, the perpetrators were kids.
Excuses given by parents (and administrators, in some cases) were that the
kids did not realize how serious it is to threaten people with being shot,
or that they didn't not realize how traumatic it would be to use that
method to get school cancelled, etc.
If these kids had someone to look up to other than fellow school shooters,
or the bullies on reality TV, I think things might be different.
Meanwhile, their parents don't pay them enough attention, either. Like DM pointed out, they just want to pop pills in their mouths and then not have
to pay them much mind otherwise.
My parents were not overly-involved, but they were enough to be a little annoying at the time. But I look back now and realize it was probably a
good thing. They had 5 kids and none of us would have considered doing anything like this... we caused problems, like any other kids, but they
never had to worry about us shooting a school up, blowing it up, or running over a bunch of classmates (well, not on purpose!).
