• Dairy Festival Dec 2nd

From John Guillory@VERT/MAINLINE to All on Sun May 20 13:40:55 2012
Special Event on June 2 - The Southwest MS ARC will help celebrate the Dairy Industry at the Walthall County Dairy Festival at Tylertown, MS. We will be operating two radios from local time, 9 a.m. (1400z) to 3 p.m. (2000z) on 7.282, 14.282, 21.282 & 28.482 Mhz. Come join us to operate or listen for us.

I hope to be down there working one of the radios. I thought I'd post this for folks here, in case anyone has a 10 meter radio in range to pick it up, or I think it was 45 meter or 40 meter for 7.282 I calculated before. Any way, for the sake of easieness, the 9am and 3pm are Central Stanard Time Zone times. (2p-8p Zulu Time)

Cool, remind me again closer to the date and I'll try to get you in my log. 10m has been kinda half-assing it lately despite a period of nice sunspot numbers, and I've only got 100W, so it might not be possible to get you on 10m.
If not, I should be able to contact on 20 or 40 and pass a hellow along.

Better than what I'm looking at... At least for now... ;-) Don't know what
the club is using... Probably 100w or so... I know the ham radio club
members aren't going to be too happy when I do get the radio I'd like to
get... ;-) One wasn't too happy with my Beofeng because it was a Chinese
radio. The 10 meter radio I'd like to get is either a Galaxy or a Magnum.
I'm really leaning towards the Magnum. It does AM, FM, Upper Side Band,
Lower Side Band. I think it has a CW connector jack. A low power/high
switch and variable power. Frequency read out and channel numbers.
I think you get 5 banks of 40 frequencies. It's cheaper than a yasou and
gets me in touch with 10 meter ham radio operators. It can double as a
CB, but I prefer my Cobra 29-LTD BT, and would leave it in for the blue
tooth. Fact that the Cobra is a Legal CB, would be another reason
I'd want to leave it in...

Yeah, thats really designed to be modified for illegal CB usage which is why hams tend to look down on them - HF isn't channelized, so 5 banks of 40 frequencies is very close to useless unless you're calling CQ every time.

For a starter rig, I would suggest something like the Red Hot kit or something similar - the Alinco HF rig isn't TOO expensive (under $600), but I think there's a SSB/CW 10m only rig from MFJ that has a real VFO for the price range you're trying to hit.

Basically, if it only uses preset frequencies, it's not very well suited for HF
    work.

The Magnum 257 looks like a real radio, not just an overpowered CB legal excuse
like all their other rigs. It also appears to be among their cheapest (like to
to the lack of chrome and cool blue LED lighting).

If you are looking at a Magnum, I would happily suggest the 257 based on what I
see. It does FM too and repeaters splits, so it'll let you do almost everything 10m has to offer.

Yep... only problem I see is the big minimum tuning step of 1kHz... not a killer, but it would make it hard to search and pounce. The RIT/XIT tied together and not reflected on the display is another irritating "feature".

It aludes to an "echo" and "talkback" feature as well.

The talkback sounds nice on some radios, granted I have to agree, the cobra
29 LTD BT is the only radio I ever had with talk back, and it's talkback is
so quiet, you just as well not have it.... Never had an echo or echo mike,
so I'm not spoiled with those features. But the 1khz tuning.... That's
sounding a problem! I have a handy talkie as some call it, that has an
annoying hard click type tuner... I'd rather gently push the knob a little,
then the knob just sorta glides as it whizzes through the frequencies to get
to the one you want. Much like an old high-fi stereo from the 70's....
It does have a nice feature.... You see that annoying click and .005 mHz
step rate can take a while to get from 454 mHz to 456 mHz. To alliviate
this problem, you push the Function button and turn the VFO, and the
frequency jumps 1 mHz at a time...
