    1) Does using an HF receiver require a license? (I'm assuming no, but... I'd like your opinions)
    2) Can you suggest an online shop?

    In the US, no a license is not required. My understanding is that in the UK
    it is, so it depends on your location.

    Regarding recommendations for an online shop, I guess the Ham Radio Outlet would be a good start, http://www.hamradio.com and possibly http://www.gigaparts.com.

    Receiver only, NO transceiver / Transmitter, Yes, assuming you want
    to transmit...

    2) Can you suggest an online shop?
    Receiver, these days? Only a scanner would be new, or a Shortwave
    Radio, Countycomm.com I think has a shortwave radio... Their SSB-5 I
    think it is... Beyond that, not really sure... Search the web for
    Short Wave Radio, or Scanners...

    Many people are using SDR dongles now to receive, good way to receive a large chunk of band for a very cheap price. the dongle runs from around 8-20 depending on what you get at amazon, ebay, etc. I suggest using a custom antenna for the band you really want to receive the most on, and maybe even an upconverter.
