For some reason I think this topic was started last year about crystals. I was in contact with a person who grinds his own crystals with good results. I will try and contact him again. He might be able to help any ham who is looking to restore old gear.

I don't remember that.. I did order a 144.45 Transmit crystal from AF4K today. I am getting an almost mint condition Clegg 22'er on the air soon. :)

Holy crap. I think we are in the wrong business. Time to start making crystals. Best of luck getting the rig on the air. No matter what it cost, getting a good report from a radio, that you work hard on is always worth it. When I build my HF station. I think I am going to go all vintage. At least rigs that are vintage that are in my price range and I can work on.

12 Bucks for the crystal, 18 bucks for an OEM Clegg mic, 10 bucks for a scanned manual, and 50 bucks for the radio.

So, $90 to have a 41 year old rig on the air is not too bad.. The rig is nice and clean too! My digital camera crapped out so I can't show you a pic. :(

Ok, that makes more sense. But again, I have seen other items that are vintage and hard to acquire get very pricey. But its good to see others get vintage rigs on the air. Again, it seems to be the thing these days. Not that its a bad thing.

Since the FCC started the whole digital transmission there has been a huge surplus in radio equipment from broadcast stations. One group here is putting VFO's in the AM broadcast transmitters and using them on the bands. They sound so good and clear. The audio is just fantastic. But then again, they were AM radio stations. Most of the older RCA transmitters seems to be the way to go.

An old broadcast transmitter would be *WAY* too wideband to be used on an amateur band. Amateur AM should be 5-6 KHz at the *most*. Broadcast AM
is what? 25 KHz? Won't take many of those to completely swamp the
'phone' section of the band, will it? An SSB -- even wideband SSB -- rig would be 10th that, or less.

I think they "fix" them to be more narrow..

They do a lot more work to them. I know they don't just toss in a VFO and call it good. I can't tell you what all they do. But I know it takes quite a bit to convert them.. Also, some of the people I know, convert them into linears. I would suspect, if they were converted into a linear, what you feed it, you would get out of it. + - a little.

It would work. It would probably exceed legal lomot for all but the
    smallest broadcast transmitters, tho...

Yes, some of the smaller transmitters are only 500 or 1000watts. Then you get into the 2000 to 5000 watt big boys. Or even 50,000 watts. :) Yumm. Put that one on line next to your neighbors house.

Allmost all the Am transmitter can run at any power level from 20 watts to full power. The reason for that was, at night each AM station has to power down to there nite time limit. That is set by the FCC, so they do not walk on other stations a state or two away. So you can turn the power down and run full legal limit..

He has to run it off one of his search lights generator. can't get 3 phase power at his house. Its more of a collectors item that works. I don't think I have ever seen him put it on the air. Only in a dummy load. Again, the bird load is F'ing big... But all in all, its a blast to play with this stuff.
