Has anyone heard of GNU Radio? Takes creating the wave and making is programatically instead of with the hardware. Rather interesting. If you hav the right hardware you can make just about any wavelength you want. Check it out...

Been there. Done that.
I've worked (2-way) AMSAT-OSCAR 10, UoSAT-OSCAR-11, AMSAT-OSCAR-13, AMSAT-OSCAR 16, LUSAT-OSCAR-19, Fuji-OSCAR 20, KitSAT-OSCAR 23, AMRAD-OSCAR 27 Radio-Sputnik 14 and MIR, and have copied direct telemetry and voice modes from Dove-OSCAR 17, and STS-35 (Columbia).

There have been *several* "Radio-Sputnik" birds, but I never worked THE Sputnik, no.

You DO need Hardware. There is a Recieve and Transmit Front end
Required and a Digital to Analog converter for the Transmit Front end
and a Analog to Digital converter fro the Recieve Front end.
The rest is done in Computer Software.
