    I'd like to get started in HAM Radio but I haen't got any clear idea where
    to start. Do you have any suggestions, recommended books, or recomended equipment?

    Yeah, flies will eat just about anything. You must get some kind of
    electric pulse while eating that thing, you ought to be able to hook it
    up to some kind of bug zapper. <g>

    I'm just getting into the hobby myself. It will be a while before I take the exam for my license as I don't have too much time to devote to the hobby yet. In the meantime I bought a used HF receiver (Icom RC-R71E) and strung up a 67 foot wire antenna. I've been listening to amateur radio conversations as well as getting into digital modes (RTTY, PSK31, etc). There is some good free software for that such as DM 780 (Window) or Fldigi (Win, Linux, Mac).

    One thing you're going to need is basic radio propagation knowledge. There are a ton of books on that. I'd just go to the library and choose one.

    A couple of good forums are www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/ and forums.qrz.com

    I bought a book sold by RAC (Radio Amateurs of Canada). It is a self-study guide. You'll want one for the US. I can't recommend one but I bet there's info on the ARRL site.

    So far I've spent about $300. The receiver was $200. The book was $20. I bought an antenna for about $50.

    To choose a used receiver, go through eBay like you suggested and then when you find something in your price do a google search in eham.net for reviews (i.e. in the google search type site:eham.net receivernamehere). I found eham.net very useful for getting a feel of whether a piece of equipment is decent or not.

    Thanks, thats kind of what I was thinking. I managed to get a book for christmas it's a ham radio for dummies book but I plan on getting the AARL book at some point. Then also figuring out what kind of radio equipment I
    want to get. I'm hoping that is where the dummies book will help.

    You might look for a club in your area to ask for advice on equipment. Especially if you are buying used. Radios are expensive, even used ones and you wouldn't want to choose one that you regret buying later on.
