Not HAM, but CB Radio... I unboxed some gear I've had stored in the garage for some 20 years or so and set it up:
    * President Washington Base Station, modified for add'l upper/lower chans
    * Antron-99 1/2 wave 11M antenna and mast
    * Astatic D-104 (Silver Eagle) powered microphone

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md__VVYbrek

I've received lots of DX skip (mainly on channel 38, LSB), and some 30-50 mi. "local" skip contacts. I'm pretty sure I'm just transmitting the legal 4 watts (though I know the station can be modified for 10 watts fairly easily).

I'm considering upgrading the antenna to an IMAX-2000 (5/8 wave), getting a linear amp and/or getting a 10M HAM transceiver (and a liense of course). Sort of studying for the technician license now.

    Any suggestions?

    Awesome!!
Ok.. so I'm a HAM too but.. I too have my old Prez Washington in the loft. I would LOVE to set it up again! That and one of my Ranger AR3500's With an
old Texas Star original 250Watt Amp. Unfortunately, Finances mandated that I purchase a home in a CC&R governed community led by Roof Nazi's so no antenna for me.
What a blast it was back in the day though. Working on the 'extra' channels, all modes, I even used to make Phase Modulators for rigs so you cound essentially work FM on a CB. I think I still have a couple of Roger Beep boards I made out in the garage.
    Those were the days!!

Now it's mostly UHF/VHF for me and that's pretty annoying with some of the arrogance that accompanies the repeaters in my area.

No problems with neighbor interference when trasmitting?

I used to work sporadic skip many years ago on my CB with no amp. I have more luck with 10m and a home made wire dipole on my roof. Reach South America pretty regularly. You don't need an amp. My 10m puts out 30 watts.

You don't need an antenna on the roof for UHF/VHF?

Actually I didn't because of HT's but I do have one - it took 16 years to get approval for a Diamond X50. a 5' tall fiberglass pole.
There's no way the association will approve a CB antenna let along an
    Antron99 or a 5/8 wave groundplane ;-)

    Hiya Digital Man,
My suggestion would be to not put any money into CB. Get you tech license and get in touch with me. CB is great if you want to get into cursing matches and put up with a bucnh of crap.

Smart as you are Rob you shoud have no trouble getting licensed. Onve livensed it can be fairly east and inexpensive to get on the air.

I really liked finding this message and your interest. You may email me via my call sign @arrl.net. W6BBS
Also not to far from you is WARLORD, KA6HGT, he to would be excited to hear you getting involved with Amateur Radio.

I am a ham radio operator KE5TWW and I still have a CB radio in the car and in the house as well as my ham radio equipment. As to bad language and crap on the CB radio that is not totally true. You might here a trucker now and then talk bad language but that is not often. And besides there are other channels besides 19 that are almost dead on CB. I believe that all radio systems are a tool to be used Ham and otherwise. So I will continue to be a HAM operator as well as a CB operator. You do what you want to do

LMFAO, have you been to Reno? 19 is about as bad as a 70's porn movie.

Any how, I have my CB base, and will never get rid of it. Its a Dak mark X with a Palomar VC-100 and a D-104 Night eagle. Also a 200 watt tube amp. (yeah I know) The Dak has never been so called tweaked or opened up. Just as stock, and new. That and I am the 2 owner.

I keep it around just in case, and besides its a great looking radio. Even the HF hams who come over are in love with it, and it kills them every time I tell them it's just a 40 CH SSB CB base.

But I sill love VHF and UHF the most. I have a repeater on 145.270 at 7800 feet, and two UHF repeaters. All Motorola.. (like that is much now with all the surplus gear)

Over here Channel 6 is sometimes busier than 19. When it's not busier, it's definitely as busy as 19. I will listen to 19 on the hwy when traveling back and forth to/from Louisiana and Mississippi, and Channel 6, I tend to listen to in-town.
