The lesson of backing up has been learned :(
too long the hit took me a while to recover from

looking forward to be up and running again (with backups this time)

    cheers all!

Glad to hear you're up and running again!

I almost lost all (20+ years worth of) files a couple of years back... But an external hard drive miraculously survived (it was connected to the failing equipment which burned all its internal hard drives!) and reduced the loss to one month of changes, and in the middle of summer those weren't very many in practice. Phew!

Added a cloud backup to the mix after that... :-O

    Best regards

As I set up a secondary system (just for mail server), I added a 1TB external USB drive. Easy and fast to do. Took a bit to format the drive but once done, all is well. I just backed up 3GB in 2.5 minutes. Works for me as a backup.

I will definitely not trust a single hdd for backup, at least for the config areas I would possibly supllemant with an email with gzip to my personal gmail inbox once a day/week/month.

as for file areas - I lost some very oldschool israeli BBS scene files and i am devistated about it. can only hope for the best in the future. and backup in more locations. considering even archive.org or ipfs.

I've got a Synology NAS at home that I have a script that backs up from
my remote servers (rsync) to local directories on my desktop, then over
    to the NAS.

Almost all my projects are on gitlab, github and/or dropbox.

Depending on your connectivity, might be worth cloning your filebases to Amazon AWS S3, Digital Ocean storage or Azure Blob Storage... There are
FUSE links that can cache local to the remote storage. Depending on
your config, wouldn't be too hard to have web links directed at the
    storage directly.

One thing I slightly regret is not actively archiving more file areas,
in fact, in the 20+ years of roughneck bbs, in various states, I don't
think I've really configured any file areas for common access. Now it's become nearly impossible to find some of the legacy archive files, in particular DOS utilities and related are much harder to come by.
