Afternoon Y'all. Just checking to make sure I'm getting out.

It's been a while since I had to take down the board to focus more on the family stuff. But I think that was back in the v3.13 time range. I know I have a backup of the old bbs somewhere around here (hehe). But now, I have way more time on my hands as my kids are older. (They're now 20 and 14)

I swear getting back into the swing of things is rough, but I am slowly getting there. But this time, I'm running the board on a HP T610 thin client with upgraded memory (8Gig) and better SSD drive, that's mounted on the side of my desk. So at least this time, it's a dedicated setup.

I hope everyone is doing well and ttyl!

I see you... welcome back! I've got a 3 year old at home, not always easy to find time ;-)

I decided to skip running my own hardware, I use Digital Ocean's lowest tier server -- plenty of space and power for a board and
they image the machine nightly, all for about $6/mo -- our electric rates are close to $0.30/kWh so any machine using more than
~30W would actually cost me more to host at home... old hardware is fun, but it sure isn't cheap to run sometimes!

That's nice! I was also thinking of a thin client but settled for an Intel NUC. Tried a fanless Shuttle PC before that, but it got *very* hot (to the point of the SSD reporting errors to the error log, despite the temperature actually being within operating limits)...

I hope everyone is doing well and ttyl!

Well, we already are a large tech family, which is mostly my fault, my wife works from home, etc... what's one more device to power! Kids are both gamers, my son does Twitch streaming, and I have all my retro stuff.

The HP thin client has done well for me. It started out as the arcade cabinet machine until I upgraded it. But I'm not going to complain, it was $40 USD on Ebay and I had the upgrade parts already. So now my arcade cabinet has an i3 as it's core, which is perfect to run all the retro stuff and some newer things too.

I think all of them have fans, mine (a NUC7i3BNK) has one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YRTW8RL

Very quiet, and has been running 24/7 for 4 years now -- no replacement needed yet, but I have one on the shelf just in case. :)

The only downside is that you have to take apart the entire NUC to get to the CPU fan (or the CMOS Setup/BIOS battery)... Which includes disconnecting/reconnecting those miniature Wi-Fi antenna connectors etc.

NUC is a pretty wide range at this point... there are some lower power
fanless options, there are also larger options that go to a current I9
and support higher end RTX graphics cards.

I've been relatively fond of a few of the MinusForum products... mostly they're laptop designs in a small desktop form factor. Which is what
    the NUCs are as well.

I've started using some of the small/light Intel based boxes
(aliexpress) for projects since the costs for the Raspberry Pi went
through the roof.. for a full system, it's not that much more than RPi
but quite a bit better performing. Kind of wonder if the RiscV options
will come to lower end as well.

My board is also on DigitalOcean, as another mentioned they were doing
as well. For me the hard things are time and motivation... been dealing
with a few personal issues, medical issues and work, and really just
don't have any motivation at all after that... I try to check into these message areas about once a week though.

I have so many mods in various states of done, or started, or just need
to be rewritten... I used to run a very heavily modified Synchronet
board, but don't like a lot of the structure, so haven't just put it
back as it is/was... but considering doing that then moving forward.

My pfsense box is running an N6005, one of these also might be a decent option... haven't really tried it for BBS type use, but it outpaces an
RPi quite a lot... so may be worth considering.

Agreed. I would likely be looking at the I3/I5 level of performance,
which is much higher than an RPi, for sure. Also keeps it in the x86
world rather than ARM, which can be a limiting factor for many things.
    Thanks for the info.

Yes, it seems very fast, it's quiet, it's small. Came with Windows 10
and offered to update to Win 11, so I did that just out of curiosity. I
must say that if I was a Windows user, I'd prefer the version 11.
Pretty slick looking to be honest. But anyway, shortly after that it
was wiped and now has MX Linux on it. :-)

I had a $100 Amazon gift card burning a hole in my pocket, so in the end
it only cost me $229 (Amazon had a $50 coupon active for it too). That
    gets me a Ryzen 5, 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 512GB NVMe drive, 4 USB 3.x jacks, a
USB-C jack, HDMI and DP video ports, and a 2.5GB (?) ethernet jack.
Also has a space to add a 2.5" HD/SSD, so I added a 480GB SSD that I had around. Pretty nice little computer.

I literally laughed out loud at this one... I tend to be a bit
like that too sometimes. The 3550H in that should be relatively
good... similar performance to a 4-8th gen i5.

That
    gets me a Ryzen 5, 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 512GB NVMe drive, 4 USB 3.x jacks, a USB-C jack, HDMI and DP video ports, and a 2.5GB (?) ethernet jack.
Also has a space to add a 2.5" HD/SSD, so I added a 480GB SSD that I had around. Pretty nice little computer.

Glad you like it... been very happy with the newer mini pcs... I liked
the form factor for a while, but the couple I tried about 8 years ago
were not great. The new ones seem to be more than sufficient for
    home-server and BBS use.

    Hello Chronos, and welcome!

On 29 Jul 2022, Chronos said the following...

Afternoon Y'all. Just checking to make sure I'm getting out.

    Yep! Got you here!

I swear getting back into the swing of things is rough, but I am slowly ge there. But this time, I'm running the board on a HP T610 thin client with upgraded memory (8Gig) and better SSD drive, that's mounted on the side of desk. So at least this time, it's a dedicated setup.

That's nice! I was also thinking of a thin client but settled for an
Intel NUC. Tried a fanless Shuttle PC before that, but it got *very*
hot (to the point of the SSD reporting errors to the error log, despite the temperature actually being within operating limits)...

I hope everyone is doing well and ttyl!

    Yep, thanks! See you around!

    Best regards
    Zip
