I've been playing with tildes for a while - they're community-based *nix systems where people can play with shell utilities, create home pages,
gemini pages and gopher spaces, lurk on IRC and generally interact with
a community of people with similar interests - much like a local dial-up
    BBS.

There are a couple of blog generators on my tilde, but I took a walk
down memory lane and fired up blosxom, a web site generator I was
interested in back in the 2000s. It's PERL-based, but there are Python
and PHP ports out there. You create a template, throw text files in a directory, and it displays them in chronological order.

I'm liking this - I turned my 2000s era blog into a photoblog, have a business-focused blog under my company name, and can now use my blosxom
blog as a throwback journal, like in the old LiveJournal days - except
without the angsty dating drama. :)

    Sweet, looks great.

Your line-wrap question on 'nano' should be fixed by making/updating
~/.nanorc and adding these two lines to it:
    set breaklonglines
    set fill 76

    (adjust 76 as desired)

Another line I like in mine is:
    set constantshow

which shows the current line/column/char count of where the cursor is in
    the document.

I've had a shell account at SDF for years yet can't get one on tilde. If I remember correctly you have to hang out in IRC and kiss somebody's ass get in? In this day and age I can't see people knockin down doors to get a shell account. Maybe you could suggest a better way? I don't see SDF going anywhere soon but a back up would be nice. Do they offer email with their shell accounts at tilde? I love my email at SDF. No BS. Just fast easy to use text alpine.

Huh, I've had an account on both or a few years, but I don't
recall any specific difficulty with signing up. Truthfully,
    I don't remember what I did....

I guess a different is Linux vs NetBSD. The tilde thing I'm
logged into at the moment is remarkably modest: 6 cores and
16 GiB of RAM; about 1 TB of storage.

just get a VPS.. $5 or so a month. i know that's not better than "free" but maybe someone who shares your vision can split it with you? lol. though actually maybe $1.50/mo extra or so to keep a domain for it..

bit silly that a $5 VPS is better than most of the equipment from historical freenets but they get used by one person..

with SPF (and maybe DKIM) you shouldn't really have that many problems with your emails going to spam.

won't be quite the same as a freenet but do you use any of the other stuff
    they offer anyways?

I also still keep a SDF account - I paid for lifetime some while ago... I remember when SDF came online because killer's bbs got shutdown.

I hadn't heard of it either... I've been playing with a static generator called Lume along with publishing to cloudflare (pages).

    http://tracker1.dev/

Nothing really there, wanting to figure out an "easy" way to load/tag images along with general formatting. Will also probably tweak the css and make the light/dark mode able to be manually toggled (currently uses browser settings). Probably won't bother porting my (very) old blog content from the earlier 2000's.

Looking through what can be done with Lume, it's pretty nice... My configuration is a bit more simplified than some of the examples though. I may change the repo to public once I have it more flushed out.

Tilde user here. I alternate between Usenet, BBS' thru NNTP (it's
easier to read threads with a news reader), gopher, gemini and irc.
It's very fun to use, and the pace it's calmer than all the cr*p
on social media and ad bloated sites.
BBS users which have lynx available could ask the sysop to install
a gemini client; there are some "graphical" a la lynx and others
like gplaces which are prompt based with menus and the interface
it's closer to the ones in BBS', yet the content it's displayed
with less from Unix, but it's the typical text reader, even the ones
coming from DOS/Windows background will get the usage in the spot.
On the philosophy, there's lots of overlap as most small communities
are close to very few degrees of friendships/mets.
