• Downloads sometimes not possible

From Vitus Zeel@21:1/106 to All on Sat Jun 17 20:54:51 2023
    hi,

i've an odd issue. i have some filebases (not all of them) where downloading files is no longer possible. the filepath is correct. the file is actualy there. mystic log-files just says "donwload file.name FAILED" and here is
what zmodem on the receiving ends tells me: "Warning recv_raw: Cancelled remotely Warning: recv_init: Received 16 instead of ZFILE or ZFIN"

that happens in older build fileareas and newer ones. other fileareas are working just fine. i also could not spot any unusual behaviour at the file listing or anything else that could point to a corrupted filearea index file.

any idea what i could do about it?

Are the file area's filenames standard 12345678.123? I've had this type of issue before with very long filenames, or those that contain characters that Linux doesn't like:

    Star Trek - A new w0rld!!! & that other D*#(*@) software.zip

That's all I could think of off the top of my head, but wanted to at least post as I've had errors from this before.

It's likely not the reason but I notice you are running A43 and we're up to A48 in the public domain and some pre-alpha A49 versions of Mystic also. Just a thought.

    Some other thoughts

    - anything unusual about the file names being downloaded?
    - does the filename in mystic match that of the name of the file on the HDD?
    - if this is a local download do you have the same issue?
    - what if you try another protocol to download?
    - are all files in a certain file area impacted the same or just some?

nope that ain't it. i also run windows and the filenames and directories nameing schemes are plain as it gets.

hey that's perfect. you ask around to help yourself think outside the box and try thinks you didn't tought of before. so any suggestion is helpfull at this point.

on august 15. the blackice bbs turn 10 years old! insane! and it's also very nice to see the legendary agency bbs still up and running :)

well.... mystic being mystic, and i mean that in no offensive way, has
butcherd some updates very hard for me. so i always wait a long time before i encounter a feature i really want to have and start the upgrade path. there
was on time where the entire message base didn't work. but you're right it's possible time to catch up to a newer version.

so i found the issue of any protokoll i tried to download a file from
    different filebases.

i have the issue that makes mystic not wanting to send the file. it is the read-only attribut of a file under windows. (can't proof linux).

the downloads i tried cam from a real cd-rom. the files.bbs was integrated without any problem into the file descriptions so i could sort out any miss matched paths.

the other filebase i had the same issue with had also files in it that with
the read-only attribut - i guess those files came originally from a cd-rom
and the file attribut was copied also.

the question is of course why is there an error? it also didn't matter if i would like to copy the file from the optical media to the ssd first and tried to send it from there.

i also replicated that issue by setting read only to a file that was downloading without issues beforehand and it failed after i altered the files attribut to read only.

i guess nobody had implemented a real cd-rom into there BBSes yet?
will i have a cd changer that can carry 6 different cd-roms and i just like
the way that thing makes noise... anyway is there any way to clear the issue out? i can't change the attribut of a file on a cd-rom.

and yes i know i could emulate a cd-drive with tools but that's not what i want. i also thing it's an accident that read only files can't be read by mystic.

    Hello Vitus!

On 18 Jun 2023, Vitus Zeel said the following...

Try setting "Slow Media: Yes" for the file base -- that should make Mystic automatically copy each file to a temporary directory before sending it to the user. More info here:

    https://wiki.mysticbbs.com/doku.php?id=config_filebase_editor#slow_media

Note that "Slow Media: Yes" prohibits any uploads to the file base, so if you want users to be able to upload files to that file base, you will have to find another solution (e.g. clear the read-only attribute manually for all files that you copied from a CD-ROM).

    Hope this helps!

    Best regards

i tried already and it didn't change the outcome. i wrote this already but i guess i didn't explain it clear enough. sorry!

but thank you for your input!

    Hiya,

What about moving a problematic file to a working area and a working file to a problematic area ? Could be an internal move (filebase) or uploading those files again (duplicates). Don't forget to backup your filebase files etc.

    Gtx!
    sPI!

... Back up my hard drive? I can't find the reverse switch!

i tested it. it is the file attribut. when i set up a complete new filebase
and put 2 files in it one with readonly status the other without i can only download the one without the readonly attribut.

i guess i have to send a mail to g00r00 to adress this issue
