It's not necessarily about being technologically adept. You don't need
any more tech know-how to do anything on some of these Linux
distributions these days than you do Windows.
The issue is more than likely that you have been so used to running
Windows over the course of 3-4 decades now, whereas you may have never
once took the time to even look at Linux. So it's probably more about
the fear of leaving your own comfort zone, than it is being some kind of 'Linux technogeek', or whatever you want to /think/ you need to be.
By all means, if you like Windows, stick with it. If you don't want to
be a "slave to the Windows plantation," use something like Virtualbox
and install and tinker with a Linux distro where you can't do any harm
to any of your cherished data. If you break something in said VM, you
can just delete it, create a new one, and start over.
Just /using/ it is how you learn it. Just like you did with Windows all
that time ago. Even when a new version of Windows comes out, you have to
use it, and over time you figure out how all the new stuff works. Linux
is the exact same thing.
