It's the Aurora lines company changing out power poles I think Nick.. seems they are coming to the end of their life... it's a royal pain at least they let impacted residents know a few weeks before hand.
Don't know about NZ, but over here there is no defined lifespan for a
pole - they just test them every few years. If they pass they stay. If they need a stay or other support they put a black slash on them. If
they condemn them and they need replacement then they get a red cross
(we were never allowed to climb slashed or condemned poles).
Yeah here we have tests being done, not sure how often on wooden poles and I guess the concrete ones, it's the wooden ones that are causing concern that present and they get these different coloured tags on them to tell linesmen what do climb and what to treat with extra care etc. before they are replaced ... so similar set up to your comments I think.
