Just finished watching the first two episodes. After the first episode, I was kinda "meh", not because it was particularly bad, but because it didn't seem like anything special; nothing I haven't seen before in the P+ ST world. However, the second ep was much more interesting, the characters were more interesting and the over vibe was better.
Speaking of characters, there are some interesting ones I like: We got a pacifist Klingon cadet (ala Worf from Picard), a tough-as-nails Klingon/ Jem'Hadar hybred Cadet Master, Robert Picardo reprises his EMH role, but this time he's SFA's CMO and my personal favorite, Jett Reno (Discovery) as an instructor. We also get to see races from past ST series like Vulcans, Bajorans, Orions, Ferengi and apparently, Exocomps are now considered sentiant life forms.
One character I'm kinda "meh" about is SAM, a female hologram from a race called Kesqians. She looks 17, but was programmed just weeks earlier, so everything is a new experience to her. She kind of strikes me as the comic relief of the show, much like Tilly from Discovery.
One of the nice touches are the occational references to past series characters. There's the "James T. Kirk Pavilion", the "Gideon S. Turner Wing" (Discovery) and the "Boothby Memorial Park" (STTNG). It's these kind of little touches that can help ground a show, make it relatable.
So far, I like what I see. Already there's signs of romance and rivalry among some of the characters, so I'm hoping that it doesn't degrade into some kind
of Dawson's Creek-90210 kind of show.
