When I tried to edit text.dat using ;edit it gave me an out of memory error. Why is this?

Maybe you're using an external editor that can't load large files into memory?

It loads into fseditor.js by default.

I guess it doesn't like the text.dat file then. I honestly would not expect that to work very well, even if you could load it.

When I tried to edit text.dat using ;edit it gave me an out of memory error. Why is this?

because the file is larger than the buffer allocated... when the buffer was full and there was still more file to load, the system detected it as "out of [buffer] memory"...

Does any of the text editors load text.dat properly in Synchronet internally?

I use nano on my telnet session and load whitout problems.
you must use a external editor.

Why don't you try it??? And then let us know, eh?

Yes, I've always used an editor on the OS. I've never thought to edit text.dat with an editor through Synchronet while online on my BBS.
