• Git Vs. CVS

    Rob,

Congrats from moving from CVS to Git. I'm sure overall it will be better for you, Deuce, and other developers.

However, one thing I did notice is that if I download a file from there, it shows the current date, not the date it was created. So in looking at the actual file, it's hard to say it's something from 10 years ago or yesterday. Yes, I know I can look at the website and see when a file was actually updated, but if I download a copy of a directory, all the files show the current date. In the CVS version, the actual file creation date was shown.

    Thoughts?

But the version number is more important though. Couldn’t find that anywhere either.

I've never noticed the file's dates on a cvs checkout. Indeed, the cvs client would set the local file time stamp to that of the last-modification date/time in the repository. And Git doesn't do that:

I think both are important. Even if you know the version number, sometimes it can help to know when it was created. If it was created 10 years ago, I'd be interested to see if there's a newer version. But if it was just created yesterday, chances are it's the latest version.
