Depends on the BBS software. But that reminds me, I used to use IceChat to chat with users on my old BBS in the 90s, and IceChat had a feature where it could simulate line noise - When you pressed that hotkey, it would output a few random ASCII characters in a random place on the screen. Then you or the user would say there must be some line noise and hang up.
