When you get to v3.20b, there should be a little surprise. That would be cool.

All the code changes in Synchronet are published on the Dove-Net Synchronet Programming sub-board. It might be a bit difficult for there to be surprises.

I'm not sure how many people actually look at the diffs. One could sneak in a surprise along with an unrelated change, and not mention it in the commit message. (Which is all the more reason for people to at least glance at the commits.)

I don't see what's so significant about 3.20b vs any other release. Minor is a multiple of ten? I'm not aware of it being some long-anticipated milestone.

Back in 2004, I predicted (on synchro.net) that v3.20 would be the version in which a built-in web server was introduced. The web server ended up being written (by Deuce) much sooner than I had an anticipated. I think that's the only significance (to Mr. Millionaire) of the "v3.20" I can think of. The 'b' revision has no special signifance.

I'm no expert on the subject. I would say that DM holds the copyright to the project, so it's for him to decide on what stipulations and licensing to apply on top of that.

Essentially, people are free to do whatever they want with it, as long as they abide by the few conditions spelled out in the above-linked document (and the few relevant others it links to).

What about copyrights then? How does that fall into place?

The source code is mostly licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL),

Perhaps a quick read of https://www.linuxjournal.com/article/1297 will help:

    here's a partial quote:

"Let's say you wish to develop free software derived from software that is licensed under the terms of any one of these agreements. All you have to do is maintain the current copyrights and insert your copyright notice for the code you add, thereby licensing your additions under the same license as the rest of the code."

Synchronet is Copyright Rob Swindell and is licensed under GPLv2/LGPLv2 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Lesser_General_Public_License

So, modify the source, keep the previous copyrights intact, add your own copyrights ... you can sell your software but you also have to maintain the GPLv2/LGPLv2 licenses and release your source AFAIK anyway ...

What about copyrights then? How does that fall into place?

    http://www.synchro.net/copyright.html

I'm no expert on the subject. I would say that DM holds the copyright to the pro ject, so it's for him to decide on what stipulations and
licensing to apply on t op of that.

Essentially, people are free to do whatever they want with it, as long
as they a bide by the few conditions spelled out in the above-linked document (and the few relevant others it links to).

That means you, the millionairre, can BEAT IT - do whatever edits you want so long as you credit the original project....

And I'd divert to Digital Man, but I don't know if another stipulation is you never bother us again; or are required to doso as much as you do now. :P

I particularly follow this forum just for you, daddio. Just to see you.

I think its your fault tho... some of your posts, 'remember the days' are
good topic starters, but the vast majority are extremely silly or outlandish
or seem to only be written to bother the people developing sbbs software. Or worse, I've seen you attack those people on a personal level - either not realizing, not caring or just being too stupid to care that they are the ones creating or modifying the bbs software FOR you. :P

I don't think there needs to be moderation, I think you need to stop with the posts that drive the majority nuts. I think you've already chosen to go all
in on 'The Millionairre' moniker - so keep it coming. I can't believe you haven't already made it to the developers (the 5-10 people who create this beast) twit list.

Then what would you use for a bbs software?

    Probably quit the hobby.

I told this one ham radio operator (not Rob), that "if I had the choice

The same applies if "your software" was the only one around. With your

Maybe the sane buyer(s) might discipline the users on the network properly. This place needs a moderator that keeps things in check when things go crazy around here at times. Too much freedom of speech can lead to biased, racial, prejudiced creed, colour and religious comments towards other people who are trying to communicate here in a civilized way. <shrugs>

What are you a communist or something? WTF's wrong with you man? If I had my way I'd ban you from Dovenet for life. You say the stupidist shit!

Barfing out a bunch of jumbled words that you think are BBS-related but don' actually understand is hardly a public service.

How do you know what I have, huh?

I find it very unlikely that you have a generic browser extension that blocks posts from selected users across multiple different types of web forums. I find it harder to believe that said plugin works with my web interface, which approximately 90 people in total have ever heard of.

And wouldn't you have already put me on your twitlist by now anyway? Why are you seeing and responding to my message?

    Also, go away.

he posts over all of the FTN networks... it does kinda suck, because
obviously he was a lover of BBSing, came around for a bit and had some people engage him... and just - you know how BBS people sometimes get themselves
into a corner with some enemies or at least people who think they are... stupid.

I almost feel bad for him - if he didn't bring so much attention his way by

I agree that his posts are excessive and like.. jeez, extremely BBS-flame
like; it totally reminds me of BBSing history in general - and how there was always SOMEONE.

I wouldn't go so far as mentally ill, although maybe there is truth there, because we certainly are living in crazy times right now... maybe BBSes is
all he has - I've been there.

I, too, looked at first... then was annoyed... and now I just laugh and
almost enjoy looking at the trainwreck daily. But thats not nice, nor
healthy, either. He has some issues...

It seems like he got out and saw some sun today, or... maybe he's gone
forever. I wouldn't count on it - and agree that he is a certain type of stupid.

I wish that he could turn a rock, and be welcomed again and a good
poster/user. It must suck, too, to have his stigma here.. even though he brought it on himself.

I feel for him a bit, I watch/enjoy the show even though I shouldn't doso... and I feel like he's probably lonely/needs the net. BBSing, at least, is his outlet as opposed to facebook or other places of 2020 - so at some point he's one of us... he's just like 20 years ago on FidoNet and yelling about PKUNZIP or worse. :/

I like ya Millionairre. For a while, earlier in the year, you were normal here... I wish you wouldn't have went off the deep end--- and KEPT GOING.

i think you guys are onto something. i'm going to roll him his own
bbs with a msg network and info pack. then he can have his own
network to do his dumb shit.

You might end up as his go-to guy for support if you do that. Are
    you sure you want to?

    i'll just impersonate you

    How about no? ;)

$200 for the first 45min a month, and $300/hr for each hour or part
thereof after that, I'm willing. I'm also willing to stick by the
pricing mentioned in my prior posts.

For $1500, I'll build an rpi tablet kit... and another $799, I'll build
a "synchronet pro" registration extension... and for the online amounts mentioned would even do those things.
