Why is your name, Rob Swindell in the registry?

In the Windows registry? It's likely just the "Swindell" folder for the "Synchronet Control Panel" settings (registry keys and values). The Synchronet Control Panel stores its window settings (sizes, positions, fonts, etc.) in the Registry and you have to choose an "organization name" to place your application folder. I chose "Swindell" 20 years ago and have had no reason to change it. If my full name is somewhere in your Registry, it's probably just copyright information taken from the resources stored in sbbsctrl.exe. But you weren't very clear in your question, so that's just a guess.

Well I saw it in your SBBS 3.18b video and I noticed you only deleted the Synchronet key but not the Swindell one. Don’t you have to delete both to re-install the BBS like you did in the video.

No. In fact, you don't really have to delete either. I was just demonstrating how a sysop could get the default window settings by removing the 'Synchronet Control Panel' key. Removing the parent registry key is not required.

Because they say Microsoft is spying on you through the registry, is Synchronet also as well?

    Who is "they"?

The registry is just a database, an alternative to a bunch of .ini (or other configuration type) files as was used in versions of Windows prior to Windows 95.

Windows 8/10 does have a bunch of (optional) "features" where your usage data is shared with Microsoft and their "partners" via the Internet (supposedly, securely). I don't think the registry is a germane aspect of that data sharing.

No, there's no "spying" going on in Synchronet. You seem to be concerned with the fact that sbbsctrl stores some settings in the Windows Registry. This is just what is expected of Windows applications, it's nothing unusual or nefarious.

I’ve also heard and read that Linux and IOS spies on you too. Don’t you feel your privacy being invaded makes you feel uneasy in this way? Why do they have to know what we do on our computer? They say we have privacy but it’s just a word used to calm us down but at the same time worrisome. We live in a strange world with a lot of unorthodox rules that can bent like a piece of wire at any time.

I am just merely making a clarification here and just wanted to sift through the particles and barnacles of sand so I get a better and clearer understanding of the facts because there is a lot of misleading and fake news and stories out there that they make believable.

To gain a better or clearer understanding, you must first grasp the concept of basic computer knowledge and how they work, not only hardware but software as well. And if you say that you do, your questions and responses most definetly do not portray that. You were asking about the registry, then talking about viruses of which are totally different. Furthormore, viruses and malware don't simply target Microsoft Windows, all OS's are susceptible.

Do you need a firewall? I'm partners with Cisco and Fortinet among several others. :D

I know I didn't specifiy but I was more so talking about hardware based firewalls, and trying to compare hardware vs software based firewalls is pointless. If you want to talk software based firewalls, I'd be more then happy to take this to another sub, but in the meantime just as examples, Cisco Umbrella or Trendmicro Endpoint Security imo would be far more superior and less bloated then ZoneAlarm. The "best" is a matter of opinion or from whatever review you read.

It sounds like perhaps there are some basics of Windows that you don't understand. An application simply using the registry to store settings doesn't mean it's malware. It's just how Windows works.

I've also heard and read that Linux and IOS spies on you too. Don't you

I think that's about one of the most nonsensical things I've heard. How does Linux spy on you? How even does DOS spy on you? Most people don't even use DOS anymore, but back when DOS was used a lot, DOS PCs were not connected to the internet or another online system very often, so where would it have been sending your data? Also, what do you even mean by the OS itself spying on you?

    https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/malware-microsoft.en.html

That article is from GNU. Are you familiar with them? They're one of the biggest open-source groups, and they're associated with Linux. They tend to be fairly opinionated and very anti-Microsoft. They'll say things like "Microsoft's software is malware" (which is on that article), which might be an intentional exaggeration. Many dedicated Linux users openly say stuff like Microsoft & Windows is malware, because they don't like Windows, but that doesn't make it all true.

One of their examples is that Microsoft imposes changes on their Windows users, and for that they call it "malware".. Although true, perhaps calling Windows malware for that is a bit of an exaggeration.

So, you should take things you read with a grain of salt.

The Registry is just a tree structured database... People don't like it, because it's often more difficult to export/import/save configurations
than files on the filesystem. The registry doesn't magically enable any
kind of spying, it's mostly just software configurations.

Most (good) modern software tends to only store enough information on
what to uninstall when an install program happens. Internal windows
software often stores its' own configuration in the Registry.

This is just what is expected of Windows applications, it's nothing unusual or nefarious.

crap because he feels like hes in a corner as opposed to he
    really harbors ill will.

    Oh, I don't think for a minute that he's a bad/evil person. I
believe he's alone and lonely, living in a facility, with only an
iPad for companionship. That's gotta suck.

Regardless, the posts are annoying. :P I just think....... hes a
part of the community one way or another. Like you, I wish it
    would be another.

The part that gets to me is that he *could* be a good part of the
community, but he apparently *chooses* not to. Again, he's been
asked nicely, several times by several people, to think about the
methods and contents of his posts, but..... he just doesn't do
anything different. I'm not sure if he continues just to stick it
back in our faces, or just doesn't understand *why* we wish he'd
    do things differently.

I can't tell if he just can't understand (an intelligence issue),
or doesn't care (a social/develpmental issue); or even something
else. Regardless of the cause though, he doesn't change, and that
is what creates issues. He takes offense when somebody tries to
help him improve his correspondence skills, and it just goes
downhill from there. My opinion is that it's a lost cause to hope
he'll improve. Oh well. I'm gonna do my best to ignore him most
of the time, until he does change his ways.
