    DM,

I watched your rad YouTube deep-dive into FidoNet config on Synchronet BBS and it was super-helpful, as I had never setup FidoNet as a Sysop in the 90s. Between the videos and the WIKI it was tons of helpful content to sort out all the pieces that I didn't understand or have experience with.

I did have one question that is also a possible feature request:

In the video, you talk about how we can modify areas.bbs and add a * to allow for unknown / unmatched echoes to be redirected to a sub-message area/conference and then later reprocessed. I think it's an awesome feature and I've definitely made use of it!

Is there a toggle to signify which sub is to be used for this feature so that when you export areas.bbs via scfg you don't have to manually edit the line related to the sub that serves this function?

    Thanks,
    -WitNik

There isn't, but it seems like it would be easy enough to add. It does seem unusual that you would be re-exporting to (and overwriting) your areas.bbs file via SCFG however. Why's that?

This is good to know. For me, I found that while I was determining what echoes I wanted to carry, I didn't mass subscribe all at once and rescan (import BACKBONE.NA). I added a little bit at a time. As such, as I would add subs, I would then re-export the areas.bbs and then have to modify the file to re-setup the unknown sub.

I'm sure I could have just hand edited the areas.bbs or perhaps there is a process that I was confused on, but I would just re-export and overwrite.

If you're re-exporting your areas.bbs file, that's a good indicator that you don't have any additional links. If you don't have any links (other than your hub), then you could actually operate without an area file at all by setting echocfg->EchoMail Settings->Automatically Add New Subs to Area List to "List Only". However, this configuration doesn't support a "bad area" echo, which is what you were asking about. I'll give that some thought.

Another thing that would be nice would be to potentially have multiple "bad area" subs (for multiple networks). That's not really possible with the current scheme.

Ah, actually that works. You can have a single line in your area file (area.bbs) for the unknown echo, and then just use the "Auto Add News Subs to Area List = List Only" feature. No need to export your area.bbs file again. Ever.

I've never had to export my areas.bbs from SCFG. I just let sbbsecho auto-create any new message bases from SCFG in areas.bbs -- which seems to work just fine. But maybe I'm doing something wrong? In what scenario do we need to export areas.bbs?

Nothing wrong. But if you don't have any downlinks and you don't have/use a "bad echo" area, then you don't technically even need the area file (areas.bbs).

In what scenario do we need to export areas.bbs?

If you went from echolist->SCFG and then you wanted to have an area file (e.g. plan to have downlinks), then you could export from SCFG to area file.

One scenario would be if you wanted to remove some echos from whatever
    echo network.
