Does anyone know of any VOIP services that will work with a bbs system?

I used a cable modem VOIP (Comcast/Spectrum) and an analog modem (USR Sportster) over it. Worked fine. Got reliable 26.4K connections with it.

Unfortunately, most analog lines are going away (or are gone already),
and replaced by VoIP lines. These don't work well with the fax modems we
used on dial-up BBS's. There has been discussion in several echoes on
this topic...yet while the cost is much cheaper (MagicJack had a single
line for $50 a year...the phone company wants more than that per month),
the faxes or data calls don't get through. Otherwise, I'd set up the
Argus frontend, as it recognizes BBS user calls and faxes, and then
    exits out accordingly.

Did you use any special software with it?? When I had dial-up, I was
using the Argus program as the frontend, to take both BBS user and fax
    calls.

The biggest problem is cost...MagicJack was charging maybe $50 a year...
the phone company wants more than that per month, for the same service.

No, it looked like a regular copper POTS line to the home phones and the USR Sportster modem (an external).

With the way AT&T treated my late Mom and I over the years (never mind
the cost, and the fact that analog dial-up is no longer available here),
I just have the VoIP line. I'm with Xfinity, but also have the US
Robotics external v.92 56K fax modem. I may see if I can re-implement
the Argus frontend with it, even though the line through T-Mobile is
VoIP...as is the one from Xfinity.

Many will, however you may need to restrict your modem init to only
connect at either 9600 or 14400, as that's all most VOIP providers will support, since it's what is generally used for FAX lines. You won't get
a faster connection than that on a VOIP provider.
