    Subject: Synchronet Windows Service?

    Hi

Usually when I run a BBS on Windows, I set it up to auto login to a local account, and put the BBS startup exe into the start up folder, so that
when the computer starts up, Windows logs in and starts the bbs
    automatically.

I've been playing around with windows 11 and as I have the home version,
    I'm under the impression I can't do the auto-login anymore (I believe I
    can't use local accounts)

So it made me think, perhaps my bbs should be a service rather than an executable that starts up with a window...

I've never done any windows service programs, so I was wondering if
synchronet works as a service (I know it has a gui on windows - at least
it did when I last used it - but i thought it might be controlling a
    background service.)?

I'm unsure how a service would do things like doors, can they pop up
windows on the desktop? I guess not?

I could be completley over complicating things by thinking I need to use
a service, perhaps there is a way to auto start applications on windows
    11?

Never mind, I misread the "Can't install with a local account" as Can't
have a local account.. looks like Windows 11 will work the same as
    Windows 10 in this regard.

I haven't tried Windows 11 yet, so I can't comment on the auto-login ability. Seems something you should be able to do:

That said, yes, Synchronet can run as NT services on Windows: https://wiki.synchro.net/monitor:ntsvcs

Yep, I believe you can.. I haven't tried it yet as the only computer I
can run win11 is my desktop and I don't want auto login on that :)

but yeah, I was going by what I read (or misread) in news articles.

Oh cool. Should have known there'd be a wiki page :) I have to stop
writing posts as soon as something crosses my mind ;P

    Thankyou.
