Reading the last of this thread about the evolution of gaming systems reminded me of the old arcade. I haven't been to a mall in a while, but I'm guessing they no longer have the dedicated arcade like they had back in the day. Does anyone have a standalone arcade near where they live? I wonder if they even continue to develop standalone machines.

I remember one called Chiller. It had a shotgun mounted control. You basically had a minute or so to shoot up a dungeon scene, like a shooting gallery. There were a few minor graphic parts, like blowing chunks out of a woman strapped to a board. I came across it when I was eight or nine, so it made quite an impression on me.

What else? Kung-Fu Master... Hmm, hitting a blank. Any others?

in my city they still have an arcade.
it's popular with pre teen kids. the games are still fun. there's some games you just cant play at home on a console. also theres those games
that give out tickets where you buy the useless junk from oriental trading co :D

there's this cool soccerr game that my son and i would play. it had a ball on a rope and you would kick it. you could play like 10 types of games, even bowling.

My son lives with his mom during the week in Santa Cruz. The Boardwalk out there has several arcades, one of which has a working Galaga, Defender, Tempest, PacMan and Space Invaders. And a couple others I don't recall.

I have an arcade at work and another at home. Convert a JAMMA cabinet to use Mame and you're good to go.

I believe there's just a few left in large cities. When I was near
Dallas, they had one...I forget the name for the moment... it was a
large business in the mall, two stories. If I recall correctly, the
lower floor was for the kiddos, with appropriate entertainment
including arcade games. When you went upstairs, immediately
accessable was a bar & grill where you could take the family, and they
also served alcoholic beverages. The more violent arcade games, and
oldschool games, were located up here. It was pretty cool to order a
mixed drink and play early eighties games on original hardware. ;)

    I believe it's a franchise. I just can't remember the name... argh.

Other than that, locally I can only think of one arcade. It has only
a handful of machines, half of which are broken at any given time, and
for sale -- cheap. Half of the other half also have price stickers on
them. It's a very depressing place, and the busiest I ever seen it
was with five other people there. I honestly don't know how it's
    still in business.

Dave and Buster's probably. There is one in Philadelphia close to me. Probably some more elsewhere, but I've never been to them.

Of course you have Chuck E Cheese. Also there are quite a few amusement
park types that have your gocarts, laser tag, arcade, etc.

Milwaukee had Aladdin's Castle and we used to hit the local bowling
alley, Olympic Lanes, which had a good selection of games.

I haven't been to an arcade in many years, but there's one I know of that's near me, but it caters more toward kids, probably up to around 14 years old. There's another arcade I've heard of near me but farther away which is a bar, more for an adult audience, and I've heard they have a free arcade night one night a month - But it's something like the 3rd Thursday of the month or something, and I think their free arcade time is around 9:00PM-1:00AM or something. Unfortunate, because I don't like to go out that late on nights when I have to work the next day.

I worked there in high school (Whitings concessions), I got hooked on Pinball and Dragon's Lair and Gauntlet ][. Not to mention I was the first to finsh that big Sega motorcycle racer (hang-on?) the one with the big plastic motorcycle that you pushed side to side to steer.
