• Modded Nintendo Wii

Recently I decided to mod my Nintendo Wii to get more use out of it. I thought I wouldn't be able to easily mod it since I kept its software up to date - I heard Nintendo put anti-mod protection in its latest updates. I had the 4.3U firmware on it, which I think was the latest, but I was surprised to find that there was an easy software mod for it, and it didn't require any hardware modification. I found a software modding guide here: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/softmod-nintendo-wii-easy/amp/
That guide got the Homebrew Channel installed (which lets you install & run 3rd-party apps). I also found another guide that helped get USB drives going to allow playing Wii games from a USB drive - The guide was similar to this: https://m.wikihow.com/Burn-Wii-Games-to-Disc

I know people have been doing this for years already.. I just recently decided to try modding my Nintendo Wii, and I'm surprised it was as easy as it was. Now I have some emulators on it (NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, TurboGrafX 16) with some ROMs, and some Wii games on a USB. The Wii homebrew community also has some cool looking games for the Wii. It will be fun to mess with this stuff now..

Recently I decided to mod my Nintendo Wii to get more use out of it. I

Word of warning, make sure you back up that Nand file and make a copy of it SOMEWHERE SAFE. I modded my Wii, everything was fine, made some changes and now the system won't boot properly.

Solution, restore the Nand file.... Which I did not back up.

Wii is now a brick. I was going to send it to Nintendo for kicks or trade
with someone on eBay as a f___ed Wii for a working one.

Wii is a wonderful system, I have(had) mine working with PS2 controllers. It was a ton of fun. Great Atari Emulation too.

I'll have to remember to do that.. Can you back up the nand files after it's modded?

That's cool. I have a couple of Playstation controllers with a USB adapter. I was thinking of trying those with my Wii, but I wasn't sure they'd work. It looks like a lot of the emulators and homebrew games support the standard controllers (Wiimote, nunchuck, Classic Controllers, and Gamecube controllers), but I wasn't sure the homebrew Wii apps would support anything beyond those.

Yeah, there should be an option on one of the homebrew menus that says backup Nand to SD, it's either a 2gb or 2mb file, but before you make and changes or update the homebrew software make sure the Nand data is safely stowed away. Nand files are unique to the Wii, so you can't use one with another.

I actually have some old Redoctane PS2 to USB/GC/DC adapters, best investment I ever made.

NAND backups for Wii are 256MB plus key dumps and such, assuming you're using BootMii, but it should be decently consistent as the Wii's NAND is 255MB large. Also, Nintendont supports any controller you can find/write a driver for.

I made a backup of the nand from my Wii yesterday, and the nand file came out to about 512MB.

Huh. It's always been 256MB for me and others on the internet, maybe you got lucky and a 512MB NAND was dropped in the 256MB bin? xD
