Anyone here into model airplanes?

I'd like to get into them, but the idea of building one then piling it into the ground since I don't know how to fly it, isn't appealing..

Are you speaking of control frequencies in the amateur band? Yes, they are called the ISM portions of the Amateur frequencies, and MANY MANY companies and individuals are transmitting on them illegally. Like your favorite 5.8ghz Video downlink that MILLIONS of toy grade multirotors are transmitting on now? An Amateur License is required to TX on these, yet the companies and people are still doing it. the FCC just hit Hobby King with a big fine not too long ago for selling receivers that operate in the ISM band without stating they are required to have amateur license.

Hobby king replied to them "We are very small company, we about to shut down"

Hobby king is the LARGEST provider of RC and ELECTRONIC gizmos in China, US, and probably the world. but they don't give a crap to follow rules, I don't care to purchase cheaper items from them (1) Im licensed to use them, (2) their cheap (3) if they screw up I charge back through paypal. But yes.. A lot of stuff is illegaly being run on amateur bands. I'm working on getting a UHF module to wire into my FSi10 so I could stick a GPS board, an ardunio board and a camera on my glider and fly it about 15 miles out and back with the power we're legally able to TX, but it is now illegal per the FAA to fly FPV (Cameras and goggles) the law states LINE OF SIGHT. But it does not say whether it is visual sight, or RF LOS. hahaha.

In the 1970's Cincinnati, Ohio held a yearly Hamfest for OM's Only.

The one I went to had for its entertainment several (6 or 7?)
Radio Controlled Airplane flown by Amateur Radio Operators on Amateur Radio Frequencies.

It was announced over the Public Address System for everyone to turn OFF
their Handi Talkies so the aircraft being flown by the Hams wouldn't get
any interference.

"I think" the frequencies being used to control the planes were in the
lower part of the 6M and 2M Ham Bands.

IIRC after about a half hour or so the flying had to end early because
someone accidently keyed their radio and all the airplanes were brought
down before a accident or crash happened.

One of the planes had 'bomb bay' doors on it and Snoppy parachuted out
of the plane. Cursed Red Baron!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't take time to try reading Part 97 to see which Ham Band Segments
could be used for Radio Controlling Model Aircraft before I started writing this message, but I'm sure You will find it under a Mode for MCW
(Audio Modulated Continuous Wave) A2 ??? or something like that.

I think the scenario for me would play out thusly.
1: Buy expensive toy.
2: Buy expensive accesories for toy.
3: Play with toy for a few weeks.
4: Toy collects dust for a while.
5: Toy gets played with for a few weeks.
6: Bored now.
7: Let's glue some Estes rocket engines to the wings and remote ignite them.
8: Expensive bill for breaking someone's windshield as toy spirals out of control at 1000 kmh.

... All great discoveries are made by mistake.

thats the differnce in buying a "Toy" and a true hoby grade RC product, d'nt get me wrong. multorotors are excellent camera platforms but BORING to fly. eve aerobatic one. the real fun is in fixed wing..


I especially love seeking out thermals with gliders. it takes skill, and I would'nt dare put a GPS unit on one unless I was planning on making a full fledged commercial or military drone.
