• fibre experience, anyone?

    Anyone here have techinal insights and experience about fibre
    installations?

    I was scheduled to have a fibre installation the other day.
    First, the tech was given the wrong address. After that was
    rectified, he told me that he was told that my building "didn't
    qualify", even though we could see spare loops of fibre cable
    on some nearby poles, *and* there were even two spare ports on
    the terminal. My neighbor had a fibre feed to his building, no
    problem.

    When I asked what "didn't qualify" meant, all he could tell me
    was that first there wasn't any "assignment" for my address -
    which was later corrected - but something else is behind the
    "didn't qualify". As a tech installer, he had no idea what is
    behind those classifications. With two spare "unassigned"
    ports, that seemed strange to the tech. He was simply told
    that they weren't available to use.

    I'm considering AT&T Fiber, been concerned about the install. We have
    fiber on the pole, we have a long stretch that crosses the street
    between poles. AT&T Fiber is the lowest on the pole, and my neighbor
    has had his knocked down thrice in as many years by passing trucks. It
    takes AT&T a day to dispatch a guy in a van to look at it, confirm that
    it's cut, and call for a truck - which takes a week or so to repair the
    line.

    There's a logical place to bring the line in, but I'd need to run the
    fiber along the roof to get into where I'd want to bring the fiber in.
    I'll probably need to have my own cable/path run for that.

    Rumor has it they don't use exterior ONTs any more - it would be nice
    if they could hand off copper at the outside of the building and save
    me from having to route fiber through the wall, but you need to route
    power from somewhere.

    If they can get fiber into my office, which is on the outside of the
    house near where they'd bring the fiber in, I'd be golden.

    Hello, i work with fiber and other communications installs. nobody can answer this unless they are there looking at it and have access to the company's records software. if you were in the usa i could look you up and see MOST of whats up without being there(but it would be misuse of company software).

    Have your "installer" call his supervisor and they will contact the comm company. that's what they are supposed to do when there's an issue

    that's incredibly expensive and time consuming. it's also difficult to re-attach those fibers in the field. someone should be making a note to change how that line is ran.

    you need to talk to the company and tell them your idea before they come up with their own.

    When my fiber is installed, the tech made two major mistakes and a few minor ones as well.

    He did not notice that my existing router/gateway had a coax cable connected, even though he had to disconnect it. He apparently did not think it was needed, as the router he installed did not have a coax connection.

    This RG6 cable went through the exterior wall and through the crawl space under the home to the other side of the house. He proceeded to cut the cable about six feet from where it entered the wall and pull that segment through, so he could run the fiber through the same hole. You gotta realize, the copper connection that I had for uverse went through the same hole and the fiber cable is extremely small. There was more than enough room for the fiber and the coax.

    I did not know any of this until I was checking each TV before he left, and two of our TVs were not getting service. When I noticed the coax was gone and asked him about it, he told me the router for the fiber connection did not support providing coax for the interior network.

    What upset me even more is that coax was not installed by AT&T. I purchased the RG6 cable and ran it myself. The tech had *no right* to cut and remove it without my approval. He didn't even tell me about it until I asked.

    I got on the phone and was *NOT* a happy customer. The district supervisor called me back and assured me someone would be out that day to correct the botched install. When that tech arrived, he just shook his head, apologized, and then laughed. Probably for longer than he should have.

    It took him a couple of hours, but everything was connected and working as it should when he left.

    please remember, there's a lot of contractor work with communications installs. so experience varies.
