• Ntvdmx64 woes

From Rixter@VERT/RICKSBBS to All on Tue Jun 4 12:22:35 2024
I am still trying to get some old door games to play through synchronet. They are 16 bit and I am using 64 bit windows 10. Dosbox-x lets me play them locally. I hear ntvdmx64 works better and may allow them to work on windows 10 64 bit. I cannot seem to download them with out a slew of problems from windows warnings ¨ and antivirus going nuts. Is this program or programs available
on any your bbs's? Any tips on set up? I am still experimenting with dosbox
    x. I keep inching closer with all your help. Thanks.

if you download bbs dosbox on vert there's examples.

regardless, i'm not a fan of ntvdm64. it's just a hack that will break eventually. something screwed up with my install of it.

just run a 32 vm on vmware. it's free now too.

Ignore/disable/skip the Windows warnings about NTVDMx64 being a virus. It's not. You can still download and install it, just fine.

dosbox and its forks (e.g. dosbos-x) are not useful for running BBS doors. At minimum, multinode doors won't see each other's files and be able to share data in real time.

This is the wrong conference for Synchronet support questions.

I have dosbox x and get the old doors to work fine locally. I keep hearing you Gus mention virtual machines, not sure how to set one up. I cannot find any file named ntvdmx64 out there, the zip I got of it was just a bunch of what appeared to be folders. Is that correct or is it an executable file or installer? I am really new to this virtual stuff and would love to see working examples. I will move this to discussion instead of sysop only. Thanks.

Setting up a VM is just a matter of downloading some VM software (such as VMWare or VirtualBox), running it, and creating a virtual machine with it to install Windows (32-bit).. Also, Windows does have Hyper-V, which lets you do the same thing.

    Installing Hyper-V on Windows 10:

Yes, and in those folders are .bat files.

Since you're running the USA distro of Windows 10 (I assume), you'd run the usa/isntall.bat to install it.

Virtual Machines. Read up on Hyper-V. It's part of Windows and lets you run Guest OSes, including 32-bit flavors of Windows along-side your primary (64-bit) Windows host OS.
