What would you think about showing the user a visual indicator, something along the lines of "now scanning sub: x of y" or "now scanning Area-Sub".

Actually, DDMsgReader does tell you which sub-board it's scanning. I
have not seen the behavior you're describing.

I see the same behavior with updated DDMsgReader that I've never been able to resolve. I tried lowering the number of messages per echo from 5000 to 1000, and still get a 6-8 second delay with a black screen between message areas.
This is on 32-bit Windows 10, running in a well-provisioned guest VM on an SSD.
