However there are examples where say now a toaster can use the Linux
kernel (as the toaster company does not want to write their own kernel,
time and money reasons) therefore they use Linux but might not
necessarily use GNU as they might use their own utilities or a mix of
both. Then you might even have GNU/Linux/ToasterUtils.

True, that is entirely possible, but for general purpose systems, have you seen a Linux based system without GNU?

Lol. I am not really an IoT person. I do like it if I could build it
myself but for small things, not massive dependence on technology. That
is where humanity will fail (or have we already in the eyes of our

I can understand it. I actually don't hate the technology. In many ways I've seen a lot of boyhood wishes fulfilled when E-Readers and digital music options came along (yeah, as a kid I wasn't asking for all that much in hindsight). The fact that some perfectly good older technology and more importantly, physical media is getting pushed out as a result gives me mixed feelings.

That said, it's what we as a society do with the technology is what burns my ass. Just with cellphones alone, it's become acceptable to behave like complete idiots, when just a few years ago people wouldn't think of acting that way.

Plus social media makes us act bolder than we really are, but I guess that's a topic for another day.

I like CD's. Just so good. Burn a CD with an ISO for booting. Great.
Disc can be labelled so easily. Love em'. Hard wearing to unlike a flash drive which can break easily when compared to a disc (maybe not so much
BUT they are cheaper to replace).

That is if you have computers that can actually read/have a CD drive :-(
Can't say I'm happy about that trend

cds get cd rot. i like flash disks for installing oses. so easy and beats using a cd or a dvd.

i threw out all my cds and dvds and store stuff on old harddrives with redundant backups.

I guess so. Computers have made us stupid but hey some become smarter
with it, because research is easier and there are now jobs in the hard thinking world of computing.

Computers help us in that they put so much information at our fingertips, so there is a lot of potential there that we could only dream of when I was a youngin.

The downside is, they put SOOO much information at our fingertips. So much that we don't know how to handle it all and end up giving up, or switching to porn (from what I've heard...).

I was thinking more about music, but it actually applies to software packages. I like having the physical package to handle (gawd that sounds bad). Being able to stream, download and/or install stuff to USB is a great convenience. In terms of music I feel like going MP3 or streaming only removes us from the experience in some way.

I know it makes me sound old fashioned (I am in some ways), but there was always something about buying an album or cd and reading the lyric booklet and credits and physically playing it on a turntable or cd player. Not sure how to describe it, but I felt more connected to the product when it was something more physical and tangible.

It's a similar thing with software too. I remember buying boxed software including Linux distros such as Redhat and Mandrake back in the day. You could fairly easily (even then) get the same exact sofware either downloaded or purchased off of a cheap CD set, but I felt more invested in the boxed editions. Maybe it was just because I spent more money on it lol. But I do think there was a psychological difference in that experience for some of us.

Well I mean. I will burn a disk regularly enough you know. I won't keep
a disk with 10.04 LTS on it (or whatever the version is). So I can stay
away from CD rot for that. I only use disks for ISOs.
