Dude - I finally got thru [ALMOST!] all 20 levels of SkyRaiders; the freaking bad-assest door game I've seen in 25 years. aNACHRONIST, of aBSINTHE BBS is still developing door games in 2023. He has two that he's currently w0rking on; SkullHack [A NetHack port] and SkyRaiders [A Korean War door]. I personally think that SkyRaiders is the best freaking door that we've EVER SEEN... while a lot of folks have played, I think it deserves the eyes of MANY M0RE!

At any rate - its super in-depth; you can use Ace Feats [the reward/purchasing system] to better your chances as you go thru all the levels - and theres so many ways to play... you can level-up your air-strikes, or focus on ground... but no matter what, after you get past level 11 you'll be rethinking those choices. :P

Anachronist has these running on his BBS exclusively, they aren't released to the public.

If you're using Windows 64 bit, you're going to have a heck of a time running doors. Find 32 bit doors, you should be able to run those ok, but 16 bit doors will be a pretty big challenge.

The dropfile is merely the file that the BBS generates on the fly to tell the doorgame how to communicate with the BBS. It includes things like username, account details, time left, comport, etc.

For 32 bit doors you'll want to use door32.sys, which Mystic makes automatically when you use the menu command 'D3'. It places this file in c:\path\to\mystic\temp<node>\door32.sys - you can tell 32 bit doorgames to look there for this file and they should run.

You can only play Skyraiders at aBSINTHE bbs - it is a creation of aNACHRONIST and is very flipping polished. While its not available for other sysops to run, aBSINTHE is a bbs you should check out regardless - its badass. While yer there, give Skyraiders [and Skullhack!] a play; you'll be happy you did.

A few years back, I remember a board out in the western US where the sysop
had developed a game called "Motel California," that played similar to the Eagles song by a similar name. IIRC, I played it a time or two, but then
he decided to take his board down. :(

You know, the funniest thing - aBSINTHE has never had connection issues, but since I did that recording [and even during it!] he's been being either attacked by 'DDOS', or he thought maybe his radio station that he broadcasts over the same network was impacting the board.

Either way, aBSINTHE has been the most stable board for years - and I think these hiccups ARE temporary. I know that aNST checks it daily and isn't st0ked of the downtime; give it another sh0t.

aNST changed the system IP and thinks ppl will have better luck trying to connect from now on out; give it another sh0t, its worth it.

I was told tonight, too, that a new version of SkyRaiders - with a few suggestions from my video - went live. I gotta get by there to play a bit m0re!!!

Yes it is definitely worth it, if nothing else to chat the SysOp! :D

Of course I was causing chaos there with the way I was connecting in.
(141x41 was my term's size) 80x25-80x30 is recommended. (And turn off
status line.)

How's did the BBS know? Querying cursor position? Why not just get
my screen size? Maybe that's a "modern concept" that we do today?

And I was using syncterm curses mode -- so I don't think it could set the
font -- I really wasn't getting the full experience.

But still very, very cool -- even without the font!

My list of ideas to things to try doing now has grown.

Even reminded me of old times: Friend's CNet (c64) BBS, you could display user's information with MCI(?) codes. I set the logoff message to
something like:

"Hey, call my new BBS. The number is &USER_PHONE_NUMBER. Call now!"

My friend called me up the next day to let me know he and his parents
were called by an angry user claiming they had been getting phone calls
all night and day from my BBS ad. We both knew they were wrong, but it
was easier to take the lumps then trying to explain how it worked, and
that it wasn't possible. Or if they were getting calls, it certainly
couldn't have been from the fake ad.

I didn't get a chance to try that one yet. Ran out of hours in the day.
