Is anyone still using Keybase? I went through a Keybase period, then Signal and Telegram came around. It'd be nice if one secure messaging platform could work for everyone I know, but I know that having a monoculture wouldn't be the most secure way to go.
I gave it a try, but mostly to have a place I can manage my files and
MD derived knowledge base easier, but I quickly found that Keybase's unique security features built on top of block chain ain't that cool
USP to me comparing to some more convient solutions on all fronts to
have file sharing, communication and git management under one hood.
I like the idea, but keybase is way too premature for my taste to give
it a serious try.

... Xerox Alto was the thing. Anything after we use is just a copy.

I liked keybase however when development stopped after it was bought by Zoom I realized that any secure platform under the control of one organization never ends well.
Currently, my preferred secure messaging platform is xmpp w/ OMEMO encryption.

I wonder how hard it would be to migrate BBS chat to xmpp? It'd be nice
to be able to federate chat services between BBSes in a standards-based
way. Synchronet can do a BBS to BBS chat, but it's proprietary (if
memory serves).
Jabber is like the IRC, it never seems to die. My web host used to offer jabber servers, mine is grandfathered in. Glad to have it around if needed.

How about Matrix? It seems that youngsters reinvented IRC/Jabber with
this one, just added Neo approved name to it..
Still all that sounds better to me as BBS integration idea than Discord, if you want to stay pure.
Otherwise yet, technically IRC is still here.. but practically gaming
kids are on Discord, nerds on Matrix and normies still stay on FB, even these days, even if they're aware of its own privacy issues.

SO where can I go to chat with others about BBS's and life in general? I used to go to an irc server and join #chat. Now it's a ghost town.

Seriously. It's just few of us here, but who needs millions buzzing nonsense if you can find few who actually share meaningful opinions that resonate with you and trigger you to talk more. I respect this community's opinions (even if I sometimes disagree) more than most of the places online I know these days.
all of this seems silly. irc was invented specifically for the BBS. i

Ummmmm, no. IRC has been around longer, and really has nothing to do

IRC was created by Jarkko Oikarinen in August 1988 to replace a
program called MUT (MultiUser Talk) on a BBS called OuluBox at
the University of Oulu in Finland, where he was working at the
Department of Information Processing Science.

You thought I was just making shit up? ;)

ever saw it on any BBS.

For IRC, there is irc.synchro.net, not so active. There's some
the problem is it can't all be BBS 24/7 or the channel dies.
that's what always bothered me about freenode and it's kin. sure they have thousands of users but if you try to be friendly in any of the channels (off-topic.. which is a strange concept to enforce on irc) they get upset and send you to some weird channel like .. imagine #bbs-extroverts or something.
I think you're totally right. Lemmy is kinda learning this lesson the hard way right now, with all of the reddit refugees (including myself to be honest) flooding the entire federated system

I want to find a Reddit alternative, but I don't want to share it with everyone dramatically quitting <insert your least favorite giant subreddit here> and turning it into a cesspit of low-grade political spam.
