I am trying to install bind9 on an older debian system I am running.

Here's what I see

I don't know how to update settings in this OS so that I can at least pull down and install a version of bind

Yep I'm aware the OS is old now but I don't want to try and do a major upgrade process at the moment, I just need to get the software installed and running.

I did try the fix missing option and this is what it did

Try

apt -y update && apt -y upgrade

This will make sure you have the latest packages and your system is
updated before attempting to update.

I also do apt -y autoremove to get rid of stuff that isn't need any
more.

You need to switch your package repositories, Debian buster is now in the archive repository.

echo "deb http://archive.debian.org/debian buster main" >
/etc/apt/sources.list

that will overwrite your sources.list with the archive repository - make
a backup of it first.

Because it's so old, it's no longer receiving security updates, so I
don't think the security repos are available any more.

As the LTS has ended as of June 30, 2022 (https://www.debian.org/releases/buster/), and ELTS is only available commercially (https://www.freexian.com/lts/extended/docs/debian-10-support/), you might want to take a peek here instead:

https://archive.debian.org/debian-archive/debian-security/pool/updates/main/b/b ind9/?C=M;O=D

...and download the the latest files named "*+deb10u11_amd64.deb" from there (I think "deb10" designates Debian 10 = Buster), then for python3-ply:

https://archive.debian.org/debian-archive/debian/pool/main/p/ply/?C=M;O=D

...and download the latest one (from 2020) from there.

Then try to install all the packages manually in the required order (it will complain about missing dependencies if you happen to pick the wrong order), one by one:

dpkg -i <filename>

Hopefully that should allow you to install it manually. :)

did both but also hit errors again, I think because other stuff is installed on my system... actually I ended up commenting out all of the lines in the sources.list and just adding in your one.

Thank you Zip I seem to have the software installed on the box and am now working to migrate a windows config of named across to the linux bind9 install.

My goal is to shift the ns1.fsxnet.nz across to a linux box I want to keep using but shutdown the windows box ... hopefully soon.

I managed to find an old zoo .deb package (zoo_2.10-28_amd64.deb) in a similar fashion to be able to support the .ZOO archive format in Mystic. =)

Errors doing apt update or apt upgrade?

If apt update has errors then you probably have some old repo that's not supported. You can poke around in /etc/apt

It's also some have updated their pgp key. This happened to me at work last been on Red Hat.

Feel free to post more errors so we can take a look.
