Be it my imagination, or airpods have the ablity to behave like
glorified hearing aids if you're not actively using them? Think I
heard that one somewhere....
A company tried, and they failed - wondered if Big Ear had something to do with it.
They made a set of earbuds called Hear One, and they came with a killer sound-shaping app. You could adjust the sound to cancel out frequencies
(like a high-pitched screech of metal wheels on rails on a train car or the sound of tinnitus) or use it to discriminate local conversations in a
crowded restaurant. You could do all sorts of sound shaping like reducing
the volume at concerts (without that muffled sound earplugs give you) or use an ambient mode to enhance outdoor sounds.
They were lobbying to get the restrictions protecting the hearing aid manufacturers to be able to be marketed as hearing aids, but they ran out of funding and went bankrupt. I'd expected Samsung, or Apple, or someone to buy their IP and roll it into their products, but it's been a couple of years
and I haven't heard a peep.
... Overtly resist change
