• Big Storms

From n2qfd@21:1/154 to All on Tue Jul 16 08:25:08 2024
    FYI

A line of thunderstorms passed though south central NY last night(15JULY24) and have has had major impacts on Chemung and Tompkins Co.

Here at Queen City we had some power fluctuation but somehow stayed on. This isn't to say we'll keep power all day.
The Elmira Division of New York State Electric and Gas is showing 24k out which is 33% of that customer base in the area. The Ithaca Div. is showing 8200 which is more like 13% of the base in Tompkins Co.

Cellular systems seem to be managing but there are a lot of repairs underway to hard line infrastructure. All of the natural gas side people have been diverted from projects to assist with electrical issues.

If you're trying to reach a system in this part of the state and having trouble, this could be why. If you've got some friends in Chemung Co or Tompkins Co.- Campbell, Corning, Horseheads, Elmira or Ithaca area they could be in the dark. Tioga, and Broome county seem to have been untouched, the Binghamton Division has minimal impacts.

We're pretty good at picking up the pieces, so it shouldn't be long. I have seen no reports of loss of life, but there has been some property damage reported. Tree crushed cars and the like. Some NYS highways were closed in Tompkins Co, but it seems traffic has been restored as of this morning.

Temps should climb into the mid to high 80's (30's) with high humidity. We are expecting more storms this afternoon and evening(16JULY24).

I'll check back in mid day EDT and if there's some need to reach someone local to the Chemung Co area let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Same here in Central Europe. There were heavy storms over Germany end of last week that eventually came over central Poland with us close to Warsaw (capitol city) having them developed so hard that both the lighting and the voice was more closer to carpet bombing than anything natural.

We had problems with electricity in the region for last 3 days. Next wave of storms coming this night (16th of July, '24)

    Hang in there,

We had a tornado tracking across the county here just to my north a few miles again today. No reports of a visual just radar indicated rotation.

Still thousands w/out power around the region. It's a process to re energize the lines. Every section must be checked by qualified individuals before they switch on again. Sometimes it's just getting to where the lines are and they have survived fine and other times it's finding where the damage is and getting repair crews routed to the spot.

You're in a much larger population area too, so I hope they can get you lit back up again and don't loose it right away. I worked from home today and I'll go into the office tomorrow but I expect it will be quiet. As a contract draftsman I'm not allowed to be on storm patrols, but all my engineers are even though they are natural gas division.

I get the feeling I'm going to miss my Prius. The last time we had a
major outage, I was able to run an extension cord from the refrigerator
to an inverter in my Prius. I could lock the doors and leave it in READY
mode. The engine would turn over every 20 minutes or so to keep the
battery charged. Saved a fridge full of food.

I was running the BBS off of a laptop; I took the laptop to work with me
    to send/receive mail packets. Where there's a will, there's a way!

It's like having a generator (which might not be a had idea, especially if power loss is a semi-common thing where you live).

Did you ever have to replace the battery in your Prius? That's still one of the things I'd be concerned about if I had a hybrid/EV, as I've heard battery replacement in those cars tends to be fairly expensive.

Yeah, I should bite the bullet and buy one.

No, never did. I had a 2014 plug-in Prius, drove it for 9 years and 190,000 miles before it was totalled. The battery still had 75% charge, according to a diagnostic I ran.

Battery prices are getting cheaper as time goes on. It used to be $3000+ for a Gen3 prius, now it's half-that - and there are Lithium Ion batteries with more charge and less weight than the original NiMH batteries.

I'm tempted to pick up a Gen3 Prius with a bad battery and replace the battery with one of the new LiIon batteries. I've seen decent condition Priuses with dead batteries for $3K. To get a running Prius with a known good/new battery for $5K would be a steal.

THat's what I'm considering to buy. 1800W, gasoline powered, should suit my needs in case of electricity shortage.

    That's the spirit!

We were told to think outside the box then it seems get punched back into it for doing just that!

Power is mostly restored here though there are some pretty rugged spots where transmission lines came down in our hills.

Ponder, mightn't a diseasal be a better bet? You can store the fuel far
longer, in a pinch even run it on alternative fuels.
