Not all browsers fail to get files from an ftp link. Lynx will grab files from an ftp or gopher server as always although it's a text browser.

I use firefox most of the time and it won't grab files from an ftp link, I find that annoying.

It's a pain in the ass but curl or wget will get the job done if needed.
