the cliff. The downtown area now looks like a war zone, with tents, homeless, drug addicts laying all around. Needles and human waste all over the ground. It has to be seen to be believed. I mostly enjoyed my time there, but would never go back now.

I live near Portland Oregon, and there has been a similar increasing homeless population there over the last 10-15 years or so too. It's sad, and I hope something is done to help.

It would be cool to meet up. Seattle is a bit of a drive from where I am, so I'll have to see how things work out. I
don't really like beer much, but I'd bring some for you if you want. :)
I understand, though living in Texas, a couple of hours to get somewhere is like a trip to the store :) I'll probably be
good for beer, I am sure I'll be sampling some of Seattle's finest...if they have any :)

By digital do you mean CD? Or a downloadable version?

It's a bummer that some of that stuff is so expensive. It seems blu-ray movies are getting similar - I've seen new 4K releases of movies coming out that are around $28 or more. I like having my own copy of movies I like, but sometimes I'm not sure I want to spend that amount of money for one movie.

I realised that buying vinyl is nice, but sometimes you don't
get the full version from the cd version. I bought the new
Porcupine Tree album and it didnt have all the tracks. Tracks
    8-11 likely need a third record :(

That's one reason I don't collect vinyl albums.. Another example is
(I've heard) the vinyl version of Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms
album doesn't have the full version of Money For Nothing (and maybe
another song or two) because the vinyl doesn't have as much room as
    CDs.

I also don't really like that you typically get some hiss and
pops/crackles from vinyl.. I just tend to prefer a CD or other
    digital form of a recording.

I've got 3500 CDs to sell since you like them...so I can buy more vinyl.

But you're right. Brothers in Arms CD and album have different version
of Monday for Nothing, but then again, so does Canada since "faggot"
wasn't permitted on the record :)

Also, No Jacket Required by Phil Collins has a bonus track on the Cd,
"We Said Hello Goodbye" which I really like. I bet Phil had enough
material that he could have released a double album of quality work
    around that time.

Me too, though I couldn't really get into his stuff after Dance into the Light like Testify and the Motown remakes he did. Maybe I should give them more of a chance. I guess in my older age I'm more into what I know and like than trying to get into new stuff.

Similar to R.E.M. - I really like their early stuff and upto New Adventures in Hi-Fi then got a bit stuck with Up and Reveal, not even listened to Accelerate, since I heard there's a lot of political type songs. I don't even remember Collapse into Now.

That said, I was poking around for stuff for my Song of the Day* and came across Ladyhawke, and I really got into her debut, self-titled album. I think it was My Delerium that caught my ear...and she's not bad to look at either. She was like a breath of fresh air in a music scene stuff of garage/grunge bands and rap crap.

The cassette release had different (longer) versions of Money for Nothing
and a couple of other songs (IIRC, Your Latest Trick, Brothers In Arms, and maybe Walk of Life).

Oddly, the CD version of The Cure's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me was actually short a song that would not fit on the CD. I believe the missing title is
Hot! Hot! Hot! That song was on the cassette. I am assuming the vinyl
version was maybe a double album, or album + EP.

Mark Knopfler was in some sort of appliance store which sold washers, dryers, fridges, and...microwaves to name a few. There was a wall of TVs showing MTV and some guy coming out with all these phrases that he used in the song. He supposedly borrowed a pen and paper and started writing them down.

You should give Monster a listen. I think it's a well put together and produced ...oh wait. What's the Frequency was from Monster. Did you just hear the track or the album? Circus Envy is one of my faovrite songs, I love the overdriven guitar. Bang and Blame was a hit too.

I do like New Adventues in Hifi too. How the West was Won...is a bit slow to start with but then you're hit with Wake Up Bomb. I also like Leave/Departure, which are split onto different sides on the album but I think work well together on the CD where they're juxtaposed.

You have to wonder if they'd have carried on if Bill Berry was still around.

Up was their first album without him, and from what I read, Stipe has a lot of writer's block. I think he did a decent job. I like Walk Unafraid on that album. Again, Airport man is a slow opener.

Everybody Hurts I think splits a lot of fans. I'm not big on it, but I don't let it stop me enjoying the rest of the album.

I got into music late in life really, I'd buy the odd single but I never really had a goto band. I was introduced to Dire Straits and Genesis in about 1986 (I was 15 or so at the time). I neded up listening to a copy of Alchemy by Dire Straits on my 1.5 hour each way bus commute until the tape broke.

For me it's the selection. When I was in high school, I'd listen to
Triple J (Radio Station) all the time, they played a lot of new stuff,
and I didn't have a collection of music (often taped songs from the radio
    to listen to later)

Unfortunatly the music I like stopped being new, and so now the new stuff
tends to just annoy me, I'm not really into pop music and I have a
    collection of stuff I like.

Every now and then there might be a song I like on the radio, but in
between theres too much other stuff to make it not worth listening to.

    difference really? :/

Because I'm a fan of Dire Straits and not a fan of The Eagles or U2 :)

Plus, Alchemy is 2CDs so there's a nice variety of songs.

Finally, Sultans of Swing is one of the best songs ever written, especially live.

I generally like to have control over what I listen to.

Unfortunatly the music I like stopped being new, and so now the new stuff tends to just annoy me, I'm not really into pop music and I have a collection of stuff I like.

There is that too. A really don't like a lot of the garage/grunge, rap, hip hop, and whatever else kids listen to these days. Then when you do listen to a radio station, it's the same old, same old.

Yes, there are certain bands I can listen to over and over, but also there's a lot of music. tons, hundreds and thousands of songs.

One day I was driving and decided to turn on the radio for something different. They were playing The Eagles. I decide to change to another station, they were playing The Eagles, though a different song. Try the 3rd channel...commercial break...I suffer through it and they play... The Eagles, same song as the first station. This is what drives me crazy. There is a lack of variety in the commercial radio world.

Play me something I've not heard!

    fine.

I absolutley concur! It's one particular song that I can never
grow tired of. I heard it for the first time in a studio at my
university radio station. Combined with good monitor speakers
the song and instrumentation was amazing.

A few stations that I listen to have dedicated time slots for
specific programs. I'll tune into those to get a heads-up on
    new music and commentary.

BTW.. here is a playlist I built over the course of a few days
featuring mostly some new and old tunes that I'd never heard
before. Some tunes I just threw in there cuz although they are
older they still grace the REPEAT function!

Most of those are sound-worthy in the sense that they have a
mostly unique delivery. Maybe you'll recogize some, or
    discover something new!

I agree. That's one song I've been trying off and on over the years to learn to play on guitar more like Mark Knopfler plays it (I learned the chords for it, but it's not quite like he plays it).

I've only seen it live once - I saw Mark Knopfler in concert in 2015. I enjoyed the show.

For me it's the selection. When I was in high school, I'd listen to
Triple J (Radio Station) all the time, they played a lot of new stuff,
and I didn't have a collection of music (often taped songs from the
    radio to listen to later)

I had a ton of tapes of stuff I taped off the radio in (and before!) high school. I think most of them eventually broke or otherwise quit working.
    Good times. :)

Because of Alchemy, I actually have to give Tunnel of Love an advantage in
that category. That, and Otis Redding's Try a Little Tenderness at the Monterry Pops Festival, is probably my most favorite recorded live song performances.

I don't think I have either, tbh, unless I picked them up in a bundle I've not looked through yet.

You should listen to the guitar separated track. There's a lot of nuances in there that you can't pick up with everything else on top of it.

You should try the Nigel's Song of the Day group on Facebook. I've got everything from the 1920's to well, mostly late 90's some 2000's+ stuff, but as we've already established, most music after the 80's was pretty shite.

The first song I learned when I picked up the guitar was Sultans of Swing, and I still can't play it properly. In fact, it's been so long since I played it I've forgotten how to play most of it from "A crowd of young boys...". and a fair bit of the outro.

It's getting all the percussive bits in there. I mentioned elsewhere that there's a guitar separated track which is really useful to play along to, slow it down (VLC can do that) and repeat the bits you have trouble with slowly building up speed once you mater it, but you know all this I'm sure.

If you find a lesson that teaches you the first chord is a Dm played on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd fret, throw it away, It's played around the 5-6-7 frets.

There's also a lot of tabs out there. Some are good, some are not, I mostly used those as a guide to put me in the right direction.

I'll be in Seattle, WA next week for Pet Shop Boys/New Order concert. If you have a few hours, come drive up on the Saturday and bring a guitar (or two if you have them) and I'll show the licks. Bring beer :)

Tunnel of Love is a fabulous song also, as it Telegraph Road and Alchemy also has my favorite version of Romeo and Juliet, I like the keyboards intro and it segues into Love Over Gold (which wasn't on the album, but was on the CD).

I also think Industrial Disease and Portobello Belle were recorded during that concert but not included on the Alchemy CD. In fact, I know they were because they're in setlist.fm :)

A live version of Portobello Belle was included in the Money for Nothing compliation CD and it's another favorite, the live version is even better.

You can hear the intro to Industrual Disease just as they're fading out the overly long version of Once Upon a Time in the West.

But ...I do like Dire Straits :)

The traffic in/around the downtown area is horrible. I left there
almost exactly 20 years ago, and it was bad even then. Most of my time
there was not in Seattle "proper", it was across the Puget Sound in
Kitsap county. That area was quite nice for the most part, especially
if you're into outdoor stuff like biking, fishing, hiking. Not sure I
could live there any more with the way the politics there has gone over
the cliff. The downtown area now looks like a war zone, with tents,
homeless, drug addicts laying all around. Needles and human waste all
over the ground. It has to be seen to be believed. I mostly enjoyed my
time there, but would never go back now.
