GT Power BBS software originally started as a terminal client and retained
that capability throughout its lifespan. There was included a "GTO"
executable that was a terminal only, no host, version, while the standard executable contained both a terminal and host modes. It supports RIP
graphics and also has a very nice dialer/phone book menu.

The standard version works on XTs, 286s, and up. The "AT" version works on machines greater-than an XT.

GT, of course, is from the era where you had to dial out using a modem. I
have never tried it with Windows or DOS but, under OS/2 with VMODEM, if you
set the COM port in GT to the virtual modem and put a telnet address into the phone number field, GT is a very excellent telnet BBS client.

Virtual modem software for Windows used to often emulate a "soft" modem,
which in this case would not work. If you have a package that properly emulates a hardware modem, like VMODEM for OS/2 does, GT might work as a
telnet BBS client for Windows or DOS.

So far my limited research hasn't turned up anything VMODEM like for win 3.1 or dos but I'll keep looking.

Regarding you suggetsion to use OS/2 & VMODEM, is this likely going to work with early verions of OS/2 (i.e. the ones that will run on a 286) or am I
would I need to use 386+ class machine & a later version of OS/2.

This is a shot in the dark, but could you find a version of tcpser that
would work on the 286? That should create the "virtual serial port" you

I'll look around and see what I can find.

So far all I've come up with when searching for DOS telnet drivers/Virtual modems ect is RLFOSSIL which is a telnet fossil driver for BBSes that apparently will use a standard packet driver for the networking side of things.

I don't now how GT's terminal client works (I have yet to look around for it) but if it can use fossil drivers that may be an option.

Could always look at a WiModem, looks and answers to AT commands like a modem for the system its on, but connects to wifi and completes a telnet session.

The only thing I've seen that will behave something like a vmodem for DOS is RLFOSSIL, but its only going to be of value with something FOSSIL compliant, anything doing direct port writes will fail.
