i am curious if anyone uses this os on their old systems

I tried it out a while back on a couple of XT class systems and dropped it for MS DOS 6.22 for a couple of reasons:
1 - Conventional memory use was higher the DOS 6.22
2 - I kept running into extra stuff the Freedos provides over MSDOS that wouldn't run due to needing a 386 to work & was just taking up space.
3 - I have no idea why, but I just could not get anything that provided network drives to work. I tried XFS, Lantastic the novell netware client for DOS & none of them could successfully mount network drives when running in Freedos.

I have not tried it on my 286 machine though. I am pretty happy with MS DOS, but I might give PC DOS 7 (IBM's dos) a go as it is supposed use even less conventional memory than MS DOS 6.

I wonder if it would mount CD-drives. One would have to guess the system
hooks for networking either don't work the same way or are in a different location. MSCDEX looks like a network driver to DOS.

I am using FreeDOS on two systems.

A 1995 desktop with a Pentium processor and 32 MB memory.

A 2005 laptop with a Pentium-M processor and 512 MB memory.

They are both networked through a serial port and sneakernet.

I use FreeDOS because i like that it comes with source code.

I have a ways to go to get networking up. Lots to learn there.

I hope it can actually get online and make a connection to the internet.

I've recently built an mgetty system with a modem through an ATA, but I don't have to use the modem to get my FreeDOS system online.

Do your systems have network cards?

Did you attempt to get tcp/ip working with them with FreeDOS?

I just installed it on my HP t510.

I have it on my old iMac2011. It worked fine but I haven't used it on daily basis for a long time.. like 5 years or so.. But when I did, I liked to call it HackinDOS ;)

i think its a nice OS and i like some of the features. I gave up on the networking part of it for a bit and went to MSDOS. I was pretty confused on how to use FreeDOS and the documentation just wasn't saying enough for me. Now that I learned a bit more about how to make MSDOS use ethernet I think I may give it a try again. MSDOS documentation is gone now days, but I found enough online with an OK example to get my system online.

With the concept of Shadow Libraries plus AO's books there is a lot of forgotten knowledge available again and because those were once commercially published books, quality and structure is very well thought out usually.

I relearned TASM's IDEAL mode thanks to one of those books.

I've learned about packet drivers and custom TCP stack solutions purely from online resources still being actively maintained by various individuals.

If you have any specific question, shoot, maybe I have found the answer already. I've been playing with DOS on almost daily basis for 3-4 years already. Staying loyal to 6.22 as my basis.

Best equipped today is Anna's Archive. I liked Z-Library before but now it's full of scam.

AO => Archive Online (www.archive.org) of course.

If you search both, you can find a lot of interesting books for free (of course legality of such download can be discussed on per country's local laws/interpretations.
