Hi,
Take a look at hamstudy.org I think it is.
Take the practice tests until you score 90% or better and you should be good to go.
Hi,
What's the proper way to study for a license (preferably without buying the 35$ book)?
I'm not 100% sure if I will pursue ameatur radio, but it wouldn't hurt
to study in advance?
If you can find a local amateur radio club a lot of times they offer classes, sometimes for free or pretty low cost. Also, when you go to
take the test, there's two different testing groups at least in my area. One was volunteer group and the cost was a lot less than the other.

In Alabama there's the Central Alabama Volunteer Examiner Coordinator (CAVEC) its like $10 to take the exam with them. www.cavechamexam.com
