Remember when I was a teenager & using a pair of rabbit ears to see the most remote TV station I could get. Add to that not understanding how
AM radio worked (until I got my ticket)...many of my evenings would be flipping the dial to see what I could hear. Here in the US...we have broadcast stations which go back to the start of commercial
broadcasting in the 1920's as being "clear channel" stations. As then
when the system was put into place & 50 years ago...allowed me to hear more of the world than possible in BFE Oklahoma. Unfortunately...didn't know any ham's or I would've got my ticket way before 2007.
In my case...has to do with not having any interests outside of tech because of the limited/no opportunities available to me while growing
up. Was never one who seemed to be coordinated enough to do team sports available from the schools I was at. Wasn't until I went to college to
see what was available if you wanted to do it.

What I'm seeing here in the Colonies...this is actually a good thing.
As I've said the last several years...just waiting for the
apes/asteroids. Add to that some of the stories coming out on the real idiots here to wear something simple like a mask or be concerned about others around you. At least one good thing is not having to worry about those being left behind.
I got my ticket in 1989. :)
My coordination is a bit iffy, but I've managed to work around some issues. Still not great at most ball sports, so it's a matter of
"shopping around". :)

Yeah, who knows. We've got some similar issues in Melbourne, and one smartas woman tried to ignore the cops at a checkpoint. They did let
her through, but used the cop's vest cam as evidence to get her details and slapped her with a hefty fine after the fact. Score one for the
cops. :) Still sporadic parties and other stupid shit going on down there.

As I said, I like a steak, but I also like variety, which seemed to be lacking when I was there, unless you looked around. I did end up at a nice Italian restaurant in Austin, TX to break the steak monotony.
Turned out to be a great restaurant with excellent customer service. Needless to say, they got a good tip. :)

100 miles is daytime propagation, especially for the 50kW public broadcasters. Night time would be at least 4 or 5 times that, from interstate 5kW commercial stations. :)

Yeah, maybe the ABC, being the public broadcaster had clear channel status. They certainly had better frequency allocations for distance
and 10 times the power of the commercial stations.
One station in Sydney I particularly liked was 2SM in Sydney, but unfortunately, 3AW in Melbourne was 600km closer and 9 kHz away, which made 2SM difficult to listen to.

If you're talking about Radio Australia, yes, they shut down a few
years ago, which I consider to be very short sighted. I personally believe shortwave broadcasting is still relevant for a whole host of reasons. :(
Domestic broadcast stations traditionally had callsigns starting with
the state number, then 2 letters for AM and 3 letters for FM stations. Today, you rarely hear station callsigns on air, they use a more
marketing oriented name.

That was likely it. I agree. All it takes is for the local
infrastructure (fire, flood, earthquake, etc., to destroy the cell
towers and other means of communication where short wave radio can
travel at almost whatever distance you
need. The Voice of America had a station just south of the county line near Delano, CA but it, too, has ceased operations. It has one heck of
an antenna farm, though.
In the US, stations must announce their call letters every thirty
minutes, where TV stations can place it on the image. They also use "marketing oriented names" as well, but usually more frequently than 30 minutes.
